Ever wondered why some people climb up the career ladder
seemingly effortless, while others are left speechless at the
bottom? Well, it might actually have to do with exactly that!
Speaking. How you present yourself. And how to bring your
speaking game to the next level and rocket fuel your career –
That’s what Christian Krug, Host of UNF#CK YOUR data is
discussing with Nausheen I. Chen, 3x TEDx speaker and high
profile speaking coach.
Have you ever been to a boring talk or presentation? Like that
terrible you just got into something else, your mind slipped off
or you even fell asleep? You don’t need to feel caught, we all
were there at one point or the other. But there are also the
other talks. The ones that just seem to catch you and follow the
speaker, even if the topic itself isn’t the most interesting one
to you.
The thing is, although it might seem as they are natural born
speakers, they most probably aren’t. They just have a great
toolset of speaking methods and a strong message to deliver.
Paired with a certain level of confidence this gives you an
almost unstoppable force to be reckoned with.
But why should you care about speaking, if you never want to be
on a big stage?
Thing is, we are humans and in most of our jobs at one point or
another we interact with other humans. To a different extend, but
we all do. And when we engage with other we communicate. Always.
Or as Paul Watzlawick put it: “We cannot not communicate”
We always communicate something, even by choosing not to speak
up.
Especially in tech fields there is this image of the introvert
expert who is too shy speak up and has to watch less proficient
people climb the career ladder like a balloon of hot air.
Good news is, on the one hand those balloons tend to deflate and
you have the choice of taking your career and your life in your
hands.
By speaking up you reclaim control over your business life.
If you choose to remain silent, you let other take control. So as
an expert it’s even your duty to speak up if someone is making a
flawed call.
The interesting thing is that the very same techniques that make
great speakers on stage make you great communicators in meeting.
And those can be taught and learned, just like other skills as
coding or using a digital tool.
So you don’t have to be silent and let others run the show, even
if you consider yourself an introvert.
In this episode you will learn:
- How public speaking is a skill that can be learned
- Why learning to speak does not make you unauthentic
- Which tricks can help you level up your speaking skills
- How to reclaim your career by speaking up
