German Podcast Episode #175: Neha's day in Sofia on 11th March 2020

Hallo Leute, willkommen zurück zu meinem Podcast. Heute werde ich
euch von meinem Tag in Sofia am 11. März erzählen.


Ich begann meinen Tag mit der Alexander-Newsky Kathedrale. Sie
wurde zwischen 1904 und 1912 gebaut und ist immer noch die größte
Kathedrale auf dem Balkan. Der neobyzantinische Architekturstil
ist so beeindruckend. Die Kathedrale ist enorm und kann bis zu
5.000 Menschen aufnehmen.


Ich habe ungefähr 2 Stunden damit verbracht, im Inneren zu
erkunden und die ruhige Atmosphäre zu genießen.


Nach der Kathedrale wanderte ich im umliegenden Park herum. Es
gab Leute, die handgemachte Sachen verkauften, und einige
Künstler verkauften ihre Gemälde.


Ein paar Meter entfernt befindet sich die Basilika St. Sofia. Sie
ist wirklich alt, aus dem 4. Jahrhundert. Das einfache
Kreuzdesign der heutigen Basilika wird als die fünfte Struktur
angesehen, die an dieser Stelle gebaut wurde, und wurde während
der Herrschaft des byzantinischen Kaisers Justinian I. in der
Mitte des sechsten Jahrhunderts (527-565) errichtet. Sie ist
somit eine Zeitgenossin der bekannteren Hagia Sophia Kirche in
Konstantinopel.


Am Abend ging ich auch auf einen kostenlosen Rundgang durch die
Stadt. Ich traf viele Leute aus verschiedenen Ländern, und wir
erkundeten alle alten Teile der Stadt und lernten über ihre
reiche Kultur und ihr Erbe sowie Geschichten der kommunistischen
Ära. Meine Tour endete gegen 20 Uhr. Ich aß zu Abend und kehrte
in meine Herberge zurück.





Hey everyone, welcome back to my podcast. Today, I'm going to
tell you about my day in Sofia on March 11th.


I started the day by visiting the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It
was built between 1904 and 1912 and is still the largest
Cathedral in the Balkans. The Neo-Byzantine style of architecture
is so impressive. The cathedral is enormous and can accommodate
up to 5,000 people inside.


I spent about 2 hours exploring inside and soaking in the serene
atmosphere.


After the cathedral, I wandered around the park surrounding it.
There were people selling handmade stuff and some artists selling
their paintings.


A few meters away is the Basilica of Saint Sofia. It's really
old, from the 4th century. The basic cross design of the present
basilica is believed to be the fifth structure to be constructed
on the site and was built during the reign of Byzantine
Emperor Justinian I in the middle of the sixth century
(527–565). It is thus a contemporary of the
better-known Hagia Sophia church.


In the evening I also went on a free walking tour of the city. I
met many people from different countries, and we explored all the
old parts of the city and learned about its rich culture and
heritage and stories of the communist era. My tour ended at
around 8 pm. I had dinner and returned to my hostel.
