To cut a long story short: Funk was invented by James Brown 1965.
He formed a new beat: ONE two THREE four. Not the normal backbeat
of afro-american music: One TWO three FOUR. That played with a
lot of bass, dry drums, syncopated guitar and more talking than
singing and you have a new musical style. And more than that:
Brown became the Godfather of HipHop. With music from Funkadelic,
Sly & The Family Stone, The Isley Brothers, Curtis Mayfield,
War, Average White Band and others. No cooking or drinking, just
funk.
