On the evening of 13th October 2022, in the Hedingham neighbourhood of northeast Raleigh, North Carolina, residents heard shots. Those who stepped outside saw a figure moving through the quiet suburban streets. He was dressed head to toe in camouflage, carrying a long gun, walking with slow and deliberate purpose through a neighbourhood he had known his entire life.

Single mom Eileen Zarlenga disappeared from her home on a cold night in March 1988, taking her coat, boots and purse, but leaving behind her three year old daughter.  Eileen remained missing for 4 days, and when she was found, it was not good news.

The question of who stabbed the young mother over and over and left her body in a remote patch of woods in Mahoning County, OH would haunt generations of investigators.  When DNA was detected on sexual assault kit swabs, it did not get investigators any closer to an answer.  And when IGG came along and was used to identify Eileen’s attacker, real answers remained elusive. Eileen’s case is closed, but you won’t see the end of this one coming.

On the night of 27 January 1997, a driver made his way along the North Circular Road in north London. In the darkness ahead of him, something was wrong. There was a man on the grass verge at the side of the road. He was on fire. The driver could not have known that what he was looking at would set in motion years of grief, of obstruction, of a family's refusal to be silenced - a fight for justice that would expose one of the most shameful failures in the history of the Metropolitan Police.

On the morning of the 2nd of April, 1993, the Jamestown Justice Court was in session. The man in the dock was charged with seven counts of lewd conduct with children. In the hallway outside, the mother of one of his victims sat waiting. Before the morning was over, what happened inside that courthouse would make headlines across the world, and ignite a debate about justice, vengeance, and how far a parent can go before the law stops seeing them as a victim.

Podcast-Folgen verschwinden.
