Mummies are witnesses of the past harbouring information about the lives and fates of our ancestors. By examining them, the conditions of living, dietary, lifestyle and cultural habits as well as maladies in ancient times can be revealed. Knowledge of these maladies can be used to ascertain the evolution of diseases and may be helpful in characterising and treating them today. Uncovering information from mummies, however, depends on the preservation of the mummy tissue. Once degradation sets in, the molecular structure of the tissue is changed, and much information is lost. Favourable environmental conditions can slow down the process of decay and, hence, preserve organic material for long periods of time. As discussed in this work, biological tissue, which has substructural arrangements that are advantageous for withstanding mechanical load, might also be particularly favourable for preservation after the organism’s death. To address the question concerning the degree of preservation and to retrieve additional information from ancient tissue, two quasi-non-invasive analysis techniques, atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, were used. With these methods, the submicron structure, chemical composition, and nanomechanical properties of small mummified tissue samples were determined. In preliminary tests on recent collagen, the main connective tissue protein of vertebrates, results showed that in addition to imaging by atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy is able to verify the alignment of this protein. Based on this knowledge, the arrangement and degree of collagen preservation in mummified human skin was investigated. Samples extracted from a 5300-year-old glacier mummy, the Iceman, were analysed. Extremely well-preserved collagen fibrils, in which the micro, ultra, and molecular structure were largely unaltered, were found. These results were in contrast, to the collagen fibrils found in the dermis of the Zweeloo mummy, a bog body of a female dating to the Roman period (78–233 AD). The Zweeloo mummy collagen fibrils showed moderate decomposition likely due to the acidic environment in the bog. Therefore, mummification due to freeze-drying, as in the Iceman, seems to be particularly beneficial for tissue preservation. The Iceman collagen, moreover, was found to be slightly stiffer than recent collagen, indicating that dehydration due to freeze-drying changed the mechanical properties of the tissue. This change likely improves the resilience of the freeze-dried collagen, stiffens the skin, and in turn maintains the skin’s protective function that prevents the underlying tissue from decomposing. Finally, also the preservation of red blood cells in wound tissue samples from the Iceman was observed. Single and clustered red blood cells were found whose morphological and molecular characteristics were similar to those of recent red blood cells. The ancient corpuscles moreover featured the typical red blood cell structure that indicates the preservation of healthy cells in Iceman tissue. Because fibrin, a protein formed during blood coagulation, was also detected, it appears that the clustered cells resembled remnants of a blood clot. The structure of the blood clot, stabilised by fibrin, may have been a protective envelope, which prevented the red blood cells from decomposing. Nonetheless, Raman spectra of the cells provided first indications of slight red blood cell degradation. These investigations emphasise the fundamental importance of the substructure and molecular arrangement of tissues, indicating that a tissue’s overall function and stability correlate with its molecular properties, in particular, the degree of cross-linking and the arrangement of the tissue molecular constituents. Last but not least the results show that ancient tissue can be preserved and its molecular properties probed and addressed even after millennia.

Summary The current study presents a unique and intensified interdisciplinary geo-ecological study in the Karst of the Northern Calcareous Alps. This is a study focussing on fundamental research. The investigation area in question focusses on the Reiteralpe in the Berchtesgadener Alps, in which a range of research methods, which in their choice and range have not been used to this extent before, are optimal for further adaptation in silmiliar ecological systems and environments. The results of the study are elementary and moreover profound to the extent that mappings of outcrops have been identified which however have not been identified before by the scientists involved in researching this area over the past hundred years. It was possible to map outcrops of pleistocene loess deposits, holocene aeolian dust deposits and moreover laterite bauxite outcrops of the Gosau Formation thereby resulting in the production of new soil and diverse outcrop maps as well as presenting a new geological stratigraphy for the Berchtesgadener Alps. A combination of soil mapping techniques in combination with using geo-radar technology made it possible to identify a pleistocene glacial cirque and cirque threshhold at 1800m NN on a south slope which likewise had not been identified in the past. An extenive soil mapping programme taking microtopographical elements of mountain terrains into consideration were extensively investigated mainly focussing on geology, aspect, slope morphology, vegetational cover and elevation. Loess derived soils and (pre-) tertiary soils and holocene soils have been identified in association with mineralgogical anaysis as a result of the mappings. Functions relating to soil depth, grain size distribution of soil horizons, clay formation and spatial distribution in a high altitude mountain karst geo system have been undertaken. The intensely enriced aluminium and iron content of the soils associated with the Gosau Formations were mineralogically analysed and the intensively weathered terra fusca soil formations investigated. Precipitation sampling during summer months were analysed respective recent holocene aeolian dust deposits in quantity, quality, spatial distribution, silica grain size distribution and mineralogical composition. The results of which were transferred with a focus on the spatial micro topographical and gemorphological distribution. With this data, a correlation was made to organic horizons of polygentetcial soil formations.

The physically-based spatially-distributed model PROMET (Processes of Radiation, Mass and Energy Transfer) is applied to the Greater Damascus Basin, which is considered as one of the most important basins in Syria, to serve as a case study of using spatial data for Geo-environmental studies. Like most areas of the Middle East, the study area is characterized by large temporal and spatial variations in precipitation and by limited water resources. Due to the increasing water demand caused by the economic development and the rapid growth of population, the study area is expected to suffer from further water shortages in the future. This highlights the necessity of developing an integrated Decision Support System (DSS) to evaluate strategies for efficient and sustainable water resources management in the basin, taking into consideration global environmental changes and socio-economic conditions. The work presented here represents the first steps toward achieving this goal through applying a distributed hydrological model (an important component of any integrated DSS for water resources management) to the Greater Damascus Basin utilizing different types of spatial data used as time-dependent (e.g., meteorology) and time-independent (e.g., topography and soil) input parameters. The model PROMET, which was developed within the GLOWA-Danube project as part of the decision support system DANUBIA, is run on an hourly time step (for the period from 1991 to 2005) and a 180*180m spatial resolution to simulate the water and energy fluxes in this basin. The model is embedded within a raster-based GIS-structure which facilitates the integration of the diverse types of spatial data. The spatial information related to topography (such as elevation, slope, and exposition) as well as those related to runoff routing (such as upstream-area, channel width, and downstream proxel) are automatically extracted from Digital Elevation Model (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, SRTM-90m DEM). The spatial patterns of the different land use/land cover classes are derived from remote sensing data (classification of a cloud-free LANDSAT 7 ETM+ image using the supervised classification algorithm). The spatial fields of meteorological input data are provided on an hourly basis through spatiotemporal interpolation of the measurements of the available weather stations. Spatial information about the soil texture is provided through generalization and aggregation of the soil type classes of the Soil Map of Syria (prepared by USAID) and transferring the soil types to texture classes. Several pedotransfer functions are then used to estimate the soil hydraulic properties for each soil texture class (and each soil layer) found in the study area. While plant physiological parameters (which are assumed to be static, such as minimum stomatal resistance) are estimated for each vegetation class using information taken from literature sources, the temporal evolution of Albedo and Leaf Area Index (LAI) are derived from five cloud-free LANDSAT-7 images acquired at different seasons of the year. The goodness of the results obtained by the model PROMET are verified and/or validated by comparing them either with their corresponding data observed in the filed or with remote sensing-derived information (e.g., snow cover). Two subcatchments are selected for the purpose of calculating the spatially-distributed annual water balances. The results indicate that the modelled mean annual runoff volume fits well with the measured discharge for both chosen subcatchment. In addition, the simulated discharge is compared to the observed one (at seven gauge stations) on a monthly basis, covering the whole simulation period (15 years). The results of the regression analysis for each of these gauge stations (with slope of regression line ranges from 0.79 to 1.04; coefficient of determination 0.69-0.90; and Nash-Sutcliffe Coefficient 0.73-0.95) indicate that there is a good correlation between simulated and observed monthly mean discharge volumes.

The global carbon cycle is one of the large biogeochemical cycles spanning all living and non-living compartments of the Earth system. Against the background of accelerating global change, the scientific community is highly interested in analyzing and understanding the dynamics of the global carbon cycle and its complex feedback mechanism with the terrestrial biosphere. The international network FLUXNET was established to serve this aim with measurement towers around the globe. The overarching objective of this thesis is to exploit the powerful combination of carbon flux measurements and satellite remote sensing in order to develop a simple but robust model for the gross primary production (GPP) of vegetation stands. Measurement data from FLUXNET sites as well as remote sensing data from the NASA sensor MODIS are exploited in a data-based model development approach. The well-established concept of light use efficiency is chosen as modeling framework. As a result, a novel gross primary production model is established to quantify the carbon uptake of forests and grasslands across a broad range of climate zones. Furthermore, an extrapolation scheme is derived, with which the model parameters calibrated at FLUXNET sites can be regionalized to pave the way for spatially continuous model applications.

Summary The dynamics of magma fragmentation is a controlling factor in the behavior of explosive volcanic eruptions. Fragmentation changes the eruption dynamics from a system of bubbly flow to one of gas-particle flow. To date, the influence of the fragmentation process itself on the eruption dynamics has been largely neglected in eruption models. This is understandable, as the explosive expansion of mixtures of pressurized gases and pyroclasts in volcanic eruptions is a complex process that cannot be studied directly. The dynamics of the gas-particle mixture resulting after magma fragmentation in volcanic eruptions was experimentally investigated in a shock-tube apparatus. We performed fragmentation experiments with natural volcanic samples with diverse porosities (10 – 67 vol. %), different applied pressures (4-20 MPa) and distinct temperatures (room temperature and 850°C). Two different types of experiments were performed. In the first type, we measured the ejection velocity of a plate placed loosely on top of a volcanic sample in order to account for the ejection of the caprock in Vulcanian eruptions. In the second type we simultaneously measured the fragmentation speed and the ejection velocity of the gas-particle mixture in the absence of a plate. In both cases the results are in good agreement with a general model for Vulcanian eruptions based on 1-D shock-tube theory, including magma fragmentation, and considering the specific conditions of each experiment. Our results show that the fragmentation process plays an important role in the dynamics of the gas-particle mixture. The reasons include the following: 1) the energy consumed by fragmentation reduces the energy available to accelerate the gas-particle mixture; 2) the fragmentation speed controls the pressure available for the ejection of the gas-particle mixture which in turn determines the velocity, density and mass discharge rate; 3) the grain-size distribution produced during fragmentation controls the mechanical and thermal coupling between the gas phase and the particles; 4) the fragmentation process may produce heterogeneities in the concentration of particles. In volcanic eruptions all these factors can affect the eruption dynamics significantly. The model presented herein is consistent with the experimental results and is capable of describing the dynamics of brittle fragmentation in Vulcanian eruptions and yielding more realistic initial pressures at the onset of fragmentation than previous models. We applied this model to recent Vulcanian eruptions of Popocatépetl and Colima volcanoes (Mexico) and estimated the initial gas pressure required to disrupt the caprock, fragment the underlying magma and eject ballistic projectiles to the observed distances. Further, the model is used in concert with a ballistic model to relate initial pressure and gas content with ballistic range. This coupled model was calibrated and validated with field and video observations of ballistics ejected during different Vulcanian eruptions at Popocatépetl Volcano. The model relates the zones which could be affected by the impact of ballistic projectiles to the initial pressure that can be estimated from seismic and geophysical monitoring, providing valuable information for more refined short-term hazard assessment at active explosive volcanoes. Finally, a general methodology to delimit the zones that can be affected by ballistic projectiles is presented and applied to Popocatépetl Volcano. Three explosive scenarios with different intensities have been defined according to the past activity of the volcano and parameterized considering the maximum kinetic energy associated with ballistic projectiles ejected during previous eruptions. For each explosive scenario, the ballistic model is used to calculate the maximum range of the projectiles considering the optimum launch conditions. Our results are presented in a ballistic hazard map with topographic profiles that depict the likely maximum ranges of ballistic projectiles (horizontally and vertically) under the three explosive scenarios defined specifically for Popocatépetl Volcano. The multi-level hazard zones shown on the map are intended to allow the responsible authorities to plan the definition, development and mitigation of restricted areas during volcanic crises.
