In the centre of our Galaxy lies Sgr~A*, a $3.5 \times 10^6$ solar mass black hole, immersed in a star cluster with dozens of massive stars. The very low luminosity of Sgr~A*, and the presence of young stars in the close proximity of a super-massive black hole, make the Galactic centre a very interesting region on its own. Moreover, its proximity allows the study of the physics of galactic nuclei with a level of detail unattainable in any other system. In this thesis, we first show that the interaction of massive stars with an accretion disc would appear as strongly variable emission in the near infra-red. Since observations have not shown this variability, we strongly constrain the current existence of such a disc in the Galactic centre. We argue however that a massive gaseous disc existed around Sgr~A* only a few million years ago. The evidence for this idea comes from the presence of young massive stars in two stellar discs. We estimate the properties of the gaseous disc that gave rise to the massive stars, and we analyse the stellar orbits to constrain this scenario. A related but separate topic presented here is the role of the stellar winds expelled by the same stars in feeding Sgr~A* and shaping its immediate gaseous environment. We find that a fraction of these stellar winds form cold clumps that coexist with the X-ray emitting gas, forming a two-phase medium. Only a small fraction of the gas is captured by Sgr~A*, with an accretion rate strongly variable on time-scales of hundreds of years. This variability suggests that the time-averaged energy output of Sgr~A* may be much larger than what is currently observed.

This study aimed to trace how the stellar kinematics evolve when two gas-rich galaxies merge. To study the evolution of such mergers, Very-Large-Telescope observations were performed for the best-suited galaxy population in the local Universe, the Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). The prodigious infrared emission in ULIRGs originates from the intense star formation that occurs when large amounts gas are driven to the center of the merging system. We acquired near-infrared H- and K-band spectroscopic data of 54 ULIRGs at various merger phases; approximately half of the sources in our sample have two distinct nuclei. For each source, we derived the stellar kinematics from the high-resolution spectra by studying the profile of the stellar CO absorption lines. The shape of the profile along various slit positions enables us to measure the rotational velocity, V_rot, and velocity dispersion, sigma, and to compute the stellar and black hole (BH) masses. We find that ULIRGs are mostly triggered by mergers of roughly equal-mass galaxies. Their mean velocity dispersion equals 150+- 33 km/s. A possible trend of dynamical heating of the galaxies as the merger evolves is observed at marginal statistical levels. The kinematic, structural, and photometric properties of ULIRGs indicate that they are dispersion-dominated systems and that they mainly result in the formation of 10^10-10^11 solar-mass elliptical galaxies (Es). Their locus on the fundamental plane of Es indicates that their end products are typically inconsistent with giant Es. The BH masses in ULIRGs are of the order 10^7- 10^8 solar. To investigate whether ULIRGs go through quasar (QSO) phases during their evolution, we have acquired similar data for 12 local Palomar-Green (PG) QSOs. The mean bulge dispersion of the PG QSOs in our sample equals 186 +-24 km/s. The measurement of the stellar dispersion in QSOs enables us to place them on significant observational diagrams, such as the local BH mass and host-galaxy bulge relation and the fundamental plane of Es. On the latter, PG QSOs are located between the regions occupied by moderate-mass and giant Es. Their bulge and BH masses are on the order of 10^11 and 5*10^7-10^8 solar masses respectively. PG QSOs seem to be triggered by gas-rich mergers, and therefore likely formed in an analogous manner to ULIRGs. However, other local QSOs with supermassive black holes of 5*10^8-10^9 solar masses that reside in massive spheroids have a different formation mechanism.

Recent measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) have allowed the most accurate determinations yet of the parameters of the standard CDM model, but the data also contain intriguing anomalies that are inconsistent with the assumptions of statistical isotropy and Gaussianity. This work investigates possible sources of such anomalies by studying the morphology of the CMB. An unexpected correlation is found between the CMB anisotropies and a temperature pattern generated in a Bianchi Type VIIh universe, i.e., an anisotropic universe allowing a universal rotation or vorticity. This model is found to be incompatible with other observations of the cosmological parameters, but correcting for such a component can serendipitously remove many of the anomalies from the WMAP sky. This result indicates that an alternative cosmological model producing such a morphology may be needed. A similar cross-correlation method applied to the microwave foregrounds studies the variation of the spectral behaviours of the Galactic emission processes across the sky. The results shed light on the unexpectedly low free-free emission amplitude as well as the nature of the anomalous dust-correlated emission that dominates at low frequencies. As a complementary method, phase statistics apply to situations where no a priori knowledge of the spatial structure informs the search for a non-Gaussian signal. Such statistics are applied to compact topological models as well as to foreground residuals, and a preliminary analysis shows that these may prove powerful tools in the study of non-Gaussianity and anisotropy.

The analysis presented in this thesis concerns the $e^{+}p$ deep inelastic charged current scattering cross sections measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The analysed data were taken in the years 2003-04 at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 319 \ GeV $ and comprise two periods of positron beams with positive and negative longitudinal polarisation, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26.9 $pb^{-1}$ and 20.7 $pb^{-1}$, respectively. The cross sections are measured in a kinematic region of four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2 \geqslant 300 \ GeV^2$ and inelasticity $y \leqslant 0.9$. \\ From the analysed data the polarisation dependence of the total charged current cross section is determined for the first time at high $Q^2$. The results are compared with predictions of the Standard Model and found to be in agreement, i.e. possible contributions from non-standard right-handed currents are consistent with zero.

In fusion plasma devices, fast particles i.e. suprathermal ions generated by heating systems and fusion born a particles must be well confined, until they have transferred their energy to the plasma bulk. Signicant loss of these ions may reduce drastically the heating eficiency and, in addition, may cause damage to plasma facing components in the vacuum vessel, if it is suficiently intense and localized. A detailed knowledge of the underlying physics in particular in the presence of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities is of crucial importance, since these instabilities can lead to an enhancement of the outwards fast ion radial drift. The development of a new diagnostic for the study of fast particle-wave interactions in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak as well as the interpretation of the rst measurements have been the aim of this thesis. The design is based on similar diagnostics that have been operated in the TFTR tokamak and the W7-AS stellerator. The fast ion loss detector acts as a magnetic spectrometer, dispersing fast ions onto a scintillator, with the strike point depending on their gyroradius (energy) and pitch angle (angle between ion velocity and magnetic eld line). The emitted light pattern allows particle identification in the phase space with a high time resolution. The major new development for the diagnostic used on ASDEX Upgrade is the use of a very fast scintillator material that allows sampling rates up to 1 MHz, adequate to study time resolved interactions between MHD modes and fast particles. Fast Ion Losses (FIL) were found in the presence of different kinds of MHD instabilities: time resolved FIL due to Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) have been directly observed. They show a complex behavior of a great variety, depending on the ELM substructure. The influence of ELMs on escaping fast particles is appreciable in the whole lost particle phase space independent of the fast ion source. FIL could be measured in the presence of Toroidal Alfv´en Eigenmodes (TAEs) in ICRH heated discharges. Both species, fast hydrogen and deuterium ions are affected in a similar way by TAEs. A resonant process between the TAE frequency and the precession frequency of the lost ions has been identied by comparisons with HAGIS simulations as the loss mechanism. A new MHD perturbation has been observed for the first time during this thesis by means of its strong influence on the energetic deuterium ion population. The mode is localized deeply in the plasma core and dominates the uxes of lost fast deuterium ions in ICRH heated discharges. Finally, bursts of fast deuterium ions ejected by Neoclassical Tearing Modes have been detected in discharges with different heating systems. In pure NBI heated discharges, these ions have energies approximately equal to the full NBI injection energy and pitch angles corresponding to ions on passing orbits. A detailed study of the FIL signal together with Mirnov coil signals revealed that the losses are due to a diffusive process. According to this, simulations with the ORBIT code have proven that orbit stochasticity is a good candidate for the mechanism that causes the losses of these, in principle well confined, passing ions. These results revealed the high diagnostic potential of this method, opening new ways towards a better understanding of the fast ion physics and therefore will help to predict the behavior of fast ions in the presence of MHD instabilities for ITER.

In this thesis we study two quantum aspects of black holes, their entropy and the Hawking effect. First, we present a model for the statistical interpretation of black hole entropy and show that this entropy emerges as a result of missing information about the exact state of the matter from which the black hole was formed. We demonstrate that this idea can be applied to black holes made from both ultra-relativistic and nonrelativistic particles. In the second part we focus our attention on several features of black hole evaporation. We discuss the dependence of the Hawking radiation on the vacuum definition of different observers. It becomes evident that in certain cases the choice of observer has an influence on the particle spectrum. In particular, we study the meaning of the Kruskal vacuum on the horizon. After that we determine the Hawking flux for nonstationary black holes. We find approximate coordinates which are regular on the time dependent horizon and calculate the particle density measured by an observer at infinity. Finally, we derive the response of a particle detector in curved background. In our approach we use the Unruh detector to quantify the spectrum of radiation seen by general observers in Minkowski, Schwarzschild and Vaidya space-times. We find that an arbitrarily accelerated detector in flat space-time registers a particle flux with a temperature proportional to a time dependent acceleration parameter. A detector moving in Schwarzschild space-time will register a predominantly thermal spectrum with the exact temperature depending on the observer's trajectory. If the detector is located at constant distance from the black hole it measures a shifted temperature which diverges on the horizon. On the other hand, a detector in free fall towards the black hole does not register a thermal particle flux when it crosses the horizon. In this framework corrections to the temperature measured by a detector moving in Vaidya space-time are obtained as well. We argue that our result also clarifies the role of horizons in black hole radiation.

Solar energy takes a leading role amongst renewable energies. For the planning of new solar power plants the ISIS data set (Irradiance at the Surface derived from ISCCP cloud data) has been generated in this study. For the first time a data set contains global and direct normal irradiance and is therefore applicable for all kinds of solar power plants. The ISIS data set consists of 21 years of three-hourly irradiances (1984-2004), which have been derived from International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) cloud data with the method that has been developed for this study. On the basis of the ISIS data set long-term variability of global and direct normal irradiance has been investigated. The average year to year variability of global irradiance within an ISIS grid box of 280 km x 280 km is 3%, the variability of direct normal irradiance of 7% is more than twice as high. Through volcano eruptions yearly averages of direct normal irradiance are reduced by 19% on average, yearly averages of global irradiance are only reduced by 3%. Global irradiance shows no trend within the analysed time span, but direct normal irradiance increases on average by 0.63% per year. As cause of these trends stratospheric aerosol and changes in cloud amount and optical thickness of clouds could be identified.

As of now, string theory is the best candidate for a theory of quantum gravity. Since it is anomaly–free only in ten space-time dimensions, the six surplus spatial dimensions must be compactified. This thesis is concerned with the geometry of toroidal orbifolds and their applications in string theory. An orbifold is the quotient of a smooth manifold by a discrete group. In the present thesis, we restrict ourselves to orbifolds of the form T^6 /Z_N or T^6 /Z_N × Z_M . These so–called toroidal orbifolds are particularly popular as compactification manifolds in string theory. They present a good compromise between a trivial compactification manifold, such as the T^6 and one which is so complicated that explicit calculations are nearly impossible, which unfortunately is the case for many if not most Calabi–Yau manifolds. At the fixed points of the discrete group which is divided out, the orbifold develops quotient singularities. By resolving these singularities via blow–ups, one arrives at a smooth Calabi–Yau manifold. The systematic method to do so is explained in detail. Also the transition to the Orientifold quotient is explained. In string theory, toroidal orbifolds are popular because they combine the advantages of calculability and of incorporating many features of the standard model, such as non-Abelian gauge groups, chiral fermions and family repetition. In the second part of this thesis, applications in string phenomenology are discussed. The applications belong to the framework of compactifications with fluxes in type IIB string theory. Flux compactifications on the one hand provide a mechanism for supersymmetry breaking. One the other hand, they generically stabilize at least part of the geometric moduli. The geometric moduli, i.e. the deformation parameters of the compactification manifold correspond to massless scalar fields in the low energy effective theory. Since such massless fields are in conflict with experiment, mechanisms which generate a potential for them and like this fix the moduli to specific values must be investigated. After some preliminaries, two main examples are discussed. The first belongs to the category of model building, where concrete models with realistic properties are investigated. A brane model compactified on T^6 /Z_2 × Z_2 is discussed. The flux-induced soft supersymmetry breakingparameters are worked out explicitly. The second example belongs to the sub ject of moduli stabilization along the lines of the proposal of Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT). Here, in addition to the background fluxes, non-perturbative effects serve to stabilize all moduli. In a second step, a meta-stable vacuum with a small positive cosmological constant is achieved. Orientifold models which result from resolutions of toroidal orbifolds are discussed as possible candidate models for an explicit realization of the KKLT proposal. The appendix collects the technical details for all commonly used toroidal orbifolds and constitutes a reference book for these models.

In this thesis we investigate a large new class of four-dimensional supersymmetric string vacua defined as compactifications of the $E_8 \times E_8$ and the $SO(32)$ heterotic string on smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds with unitary gauge bundles and heterotic five-branes. This opens up the way for phenomenologically interesting string compactifications on simply connected manifolds in that the conventional gauge symmetry breaking via Wilson lines is replaced by the embedding of non-flat line bundles into the ten-dimensional gauge group. The first part of the thesis discusses the implementation of this idea into the $E_8 \times E_8$ heterotic string. After specifying a large class of group theoretic embeddings featuring unitary bundles, we analyse the effective four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity upon compactification. The simultaneous presence of five-branes and abelian gauge groups requires the introduction of new anomaly cancelling counter terms into the effective action. These are also derived by an M-theory computation. The full set of Green-Schwarz terms allows for the extraction of the threshold corrections. From the gauge invariant K\"ahler potential for the moduli fields we derive a modification of the Fayet-Iliopoulos D-terms arising at one-loop in string perturbation theory. From this we conjecture a one-loop deformation of the Hermitian Yang-Mills equation and introduce the idea of $\lambda$-stability as the perturbatively correct stability concept generalising the notion of Mumford stability valid at tree-level. We then proceed to a definition of $SO(32)$ heterotic vacua with unitary gauge bundles in the presence of heterotic five-branes and find agreement of the resulting spectrum with the S-dual framework of Type I/Type IIB orientifolds. A similar analysis of the effective four-dimensional supergravity is performed. Further evidence for the proposed one-loop correction to the stability condition is found by identifying the heterotic corrections as the S-dual of the perturbative part of $\Pi$-stability as the correct stability concept in Type IIB theory. After reviewing the construction of holomorphic stable vector bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds via spectral covers, we provide semi-realistic examples for $SO(32)$ heterotic vacua with Pati-Salam and MSSM-like gauge sectors. These can be viewed, by S-duality, as the generalisation of toroidal magnetized $D9$-branes to non-abelian braneworlds on genuine Calabi-Yau manifolds. We finally discuss the construction of realistic vacua with flipped $SU(5)$ GUT and MSSM gauge group within the $E_8 \times E_8$ framework, based on the embedding of line bundles into both $E_8$ factors. Some of the appealing phenomenological properties of this stringy realisation of flipped $SU(5)$ models, in particular stability of the proton, are discussed. MSSM-like gauge coupling unification is possible for the threshold corrected gauge couplings. We explicitly construct a couple of supersymmetric string vacua in both setups with precisely the three observed chiral matter generations and without any exotic chiral states.
