This work reports on experiments in which antihydrogen atoms have been produced in cryogenic Penning traps from antiproton and positron plasmas by two different methods and on experiments that have been carried out subsequently in order to investigate the antihydrogen atoms. By the first method antihydrogen atoms have been formed during the process of positron cooling of antiprotons in so called nested Penning traps and detected via a field ionization method. A linear dependence of the number of detected antihydrogen atoms on the number of positrons has been found. A measurement of the state distribution has revealed that the antihydrogen atoms are formed in highly excited states. This suggests along with the high production rate that the antihydrogen atoms are formed by three-body recombination processes and subsequent collisional deexcitations. However current theory cannot yet account for the measured state distribution. Typical radii of the detected antihydrogen atoms lie in the range between 0.4 µm and 0.15 µm. The deepest bound antihydrogen atoms have radii below 0.1 µm. Antihydrogen atoms with that size have chaotic positron orbits so that for the first time antihydrogen atoms have been detected that cannot be described by the GCA-model. The kinetic energy of the weakest bound antihydrogen atoms has been measured to about 200 meV, which corresponds to an antihydrogen velocity of approximately 6200 m/s. A simple model suggests that these atoms are formed from only one deexcitation collision and methods that might lead to a decrease of the antihydrogen velocity are presented. By the second method antihydrogen atoms have been synthesized in charge-exchange processes. Lasers are used to produce a Rydberg cesium beam within the cryogenic Penning trap that collides with trapped positrons so that Rydberg positronium atoms are formed via charge-exchange reactions. Due to their charge neutrality the Rydberg positronium atoms are free to leave the positron trapping region. The Rydberg positronium atoms that collide with nearby stored antiprotons form antihydrogen atoms in charge-exchange reactions. So far, 14 +/- 4 antihydrogen atoms have been detected background-free via a field-ionization method. The antihydrogen atoms produced via the two-step charge-exchange mechanism are expected to have a temperature of 4.2 K, the temperature of the antiprotons from which they are formed. A method is proposed by which the antihydrogen temperature can be determined with an accuracy of better than 1 K from a measurement of the time delay between antihydrogen annihilation events and the laser pulse that initiates the antihydrogen production via the production of Rydberg cesium atoms. First experiments have been carried out during the last days of the 2004 beam time, but the number of detected antihydrogen annihilations has been too low for a determination of the antihydrogen temperature. Trapped antiprotons have been directly exposed to laser light delivered by a Titanium:Sapphire laser in order to investigate if the laser light causes any loss on the trapped antiprotons. Experiments have shown that no extra loss occurs for laser powers of less than 590 mW. This is an important result against the background of the future plan to confine antihydrogen atoms in a combined Penning-Ioffe trap and then to carry out laser spectroscopy on these atoms, since it reveals that laser light does not cause an increase of the pressure in the trapping region to the extend that annihilations with the background gas become noticeable. The ATRAP Collaboration plans to precisely investigate antihydrogen atoms. The ultimate goal is to test the CPT-theorem by a high precision measurement of the 1S-2S transition of antihydrogen and a comparison with the precisely known value of the corresponding transition in hydrogen. This thesis presents the achievement of the first step towards this challenging goal: the production of cold antihydrogen itself.

In this thesis, we investigate how protocols in quantum communication theory are influenced by noise. Specifically, we take into account noise during the transmission of quantum information and noise during the processing of quantum information. We describe three novel quantum communication protocols which can be accomplished efficiently in a noisy environment: (1) Factorization of Eve: We show that it is possible to disentangle transmitted qubits a posteriori from the quantum channel's degrees of freedom. (2) Cluster state purification: We give multi-partite entanglement purification protocols for a large class of entangled quantum states. (3) Entanglement purification protocols from quantum codes: We describe a constructive method to create bipartite entanglement purification protocols form quantum error correcting codes, and investigate the properties of these protocols, which can be operated in two different modes, which are related to quantum communication and quantum computation protocols, respectively.

The concept of a "quantum computer" has attracted much attention in recent years. Many research groups around the world are studying the extraordinary potential of quantum computers and attempting their realisation. Current fundamental experiments are directed towards the individual building blocks of such a computer. The concept of using quantum mechanical systems to calculate complex problems was created in 1982 with Feynmans proposal of the quantum simulator. This concept represents a well controlled framework of interacting quantum systems. The intention is to map a different system of interest not mastered in the lab onto the quantum simulator. From the behaviour of the quantum simulator the behaviour of the system of interest can be deduced. A quantum mechanical measurement on the quantum simulator is thus comparable to one run of a numerical simulation of the system of interest. The difference is that a numerical simulation can often only be run under severe simplifications that then challenge the practical relevance of the result. Only very small quantum systems can be calculated on today's computers without simplifications. In this work a system of ground state atoms stored in a 3D optical lattice is presented. Each of the up to 100,000 atoms is stored in its own potential minimum, isolated from the other atoms. This state is a formidable starting point for the realisation of a quantum simulator: every atom is considered the information carrier of a spin-1/2 system. Only very few of the other concepts currently under investigation have as many information carriers as a Mott-Insulator state in an optical lattice. We have already shown in preparatory experiments a long storage time and good coherence times. Here this system is extended by a major prerequisite for a quantum simulator: controllable interactions between individual atoms are essential in order to model the interaction terms of the system of interest. These interactions are realised by a state-selective in the optical lattice by state-selective trapping potentials. If the states of an atom are called |0> and |1>, then there are two distinct potentials V0 and V1 that each act on only one of the states. The two potentials are shifted with respect to each other and thus allow bringing neighbouring atoms into contact. Since the shifting is always performed along one of the three lattice axes, the interaction is not confined to a single pair of atoms, but all pairs of neighbouring atoms along a lattice axis interact. This inherent parallelism has allowed us to create entanglement in large systems in just a single operation. The entanglement has then been measured in a Ramsey interferometer. A sequence of one nearest-neighbour interaction produces the cluster state, a maximally entangled state. More recent proposals suggest to use a cluster state as the basis for a new kind of quantum computer. As opposed to today's computers, this quantum computer would not be a Touring machine whose working algorithm is only controlled by programming. Instead the wiring of the quantum gates would have to be changed in order to solve a new problem. This is loosely comparable to today's FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays - programmable logic chips). Until these quantum computers are built, quite some improvements on the experimental techniques will be necessary. But the first quantum simulators are now practically within reach.

This thesis work investigates the measurement of ion temperatures at the edge of a magnetically confined plasma used for fusion research at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak operated by Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Garching. The tokamak is the most advanced concept in toroidal magnetic confinement fusion. The H-mode plasma regime, default scenario of the next step experiment ITER, is characterized by an edge transport barrier, which is not yet fully explained by theory. Experimentally measured edge ion temperature profiles will help to test and develop models for these barriers. Transport theory on a basic level is introduced as background and motivation for the new diagnostic. The standard model for an edge plasma instability named "edge localized mode" (ELM) observed in H-mode is described. The implementation of a new diagnostic for ion temperature measurements with high spatial resolution in the plasma edge region, its commissioning and the validation of the measurements comprises the main part of this work. The emission of line radiation induced by charge exchange processes between lithium atoms injected by a beam source and fully ionized impurities (of C and He) is observed with a detection system consisting of spectrometers and fast cameras. Due to the narrow beam (1 cm) and closely staggered optical fibers (6 mm), unprecedented spatial resolution of edge ion temperatures in all major plasma regimes of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak was achieved. The spectral width of the line radiation (He II at 468.5 nm and C VI at 529.0 nm) contains information about the local ion temperature from thermal Doppler-broadening, which is the dominant broadening mechanism for these lines. The charge-exchange contribution to the total line radiation locally generated by the lithium is determined by gating the beam. Fitting a Gaussian model function to the local line radiation results in absolute line widths which can be directly converted into a temperature. The equilibration of impurities with the main plasma is fast enough that the assumption of nearly identical temperatures as the main plasma is justified. Corrections for systematic line broadening effects from collisional mixing and Zeeman broadening are incorporated by model calculations using existing routines for the involved atomic physics. Time resolution of the diagnostic is still not suffcient to resolve ELM events, but measuring between ELMs is possible if their frequency is low. L-mode plasmas with and without additional heating can be reliably diagnosed with a time resolution depending on the lithium beam intensity and plasma density, in best cases down to 100 ms. It was shown that diagnostic He puffing can be used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. Results from L-mode plasmas with electron heating show that ion temperatures can be significantly different from electron temperatures at the edge. For the verification of the new ion temperatures, comparison with data from already established diagnostics was done. In neutral beam heated L-mode and various H-mode plasmas the ion temperatures agree with those from a similar diagnostic measuring in the core using heating beams where both diagnostics overlap. They can be combined to form a complete ion temperature profile over the whole plasma radius. In a first application, transport coefficients have been determined by interpretative modeling for an ohmic plasma. In summary, a new method for measuring ion temperatures in the edge of a magnetically confined fusion plasma has been established. The results provide an important input to further understanding of transport in these plasmas.

A novel amplifications scheme for 20-30-fs laser pulses has been demonstrated. The signal pulses are amplified in a plasma by few picosecond long, counterpropagating pump pulses. The signal and pump pulses arrange the plasma electrons to a density grating reflecting the pump light back into the signal pulse. In the superradiant regime, the plasma electrons scatter the pump pulse coherently. By an intrinsic mechanism a further shortening of the signal pulse to less than 10 fs is possible. The experiment was set up at the "Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik", using the ATLAS laser system as source for the pump and input signal pulses. Both a regime with pump and signal pulse at the same initial wavelength and with a input signal shifted towards longer wavelengths with respect to the pump pulse were investigated. The unshifted signal pulse showed some initial amplification but further amplification was frustrated by the onset of Brillouin scattering. The superradiant regime was observed for the red-shifted input signal pulse. It is proven by 20 times energy amplification, the spectral broadening indicating the pulse shortening, and the breakup of the 80-fs long signal pulse caused by the very mechanism responsible also for the pulse shortening. An outlook is given for improved amplification in non-planar geometries.

This thesis is about normal mode analysis on multi-scale characteristics of Asian summer monsoons. In this study a new concept of utilizing generalized normal mode initialization (NMI) is introduced for climatic analysis and diagnosis. For the actual constitution of normal modes (NMs)in this study, a two layer shallow water model was selected. We used the 17 year-atmospheric data to construct the basic state with the summer mean over those 17 years and to define the actual anomalies of the special summers relative to the climatic mean. The highlight in this study about normal mode analysis of Asian Summer Monsoons is that for the first time the following were considered with the instability of the 3-D basic state: 1) the nonlinear dynamic balancing of NMI, 2) the effects of hard orography (not only quasi-linear effects of vorticity and divergence), 3) actual anomalies of special episodes relative to a climatic mean and 4) the normal mode group with a specific range of oscillation frequencies. The NMs and NMI were conducted in two experiment-groups: 1)impacts of SST-anomalies with ENSO on Asian summer monsoons and 2)interannual variability of Meiyu and connections to multi-scale oscillations of Asian summer monsoons and yielded the interesting conclusions on Asian monsoon climate. The important insight from this thesis is that MNs and NMI, which have been used in the numerical weather forecast, were successfully applied in climatic analysis of Asian summer monsoons. Compared with the other methods, NMs and NMI have two advantages: 1) the atmospheric circulation structures in different time scales can be identified with normal mode groups giving distinctive signals, and 2) the impacts of various physical processes on the atmospheric circulation or climate change can be detected from the complement of the actual atmosphere to the model solution.

The influence of cloud inhomogeneity on the remote sensing of cloud parameters and the consequences for the determination of the radiation budget in the solar spectral range are studied. Standard techniques of remote sensing are based on simplifying assumptions on radiative transport: clouds are assumed to be homogeneous throughout each pixel and the interaction between pixels is neglected. The quantification of the resulting uncertainties is of major concern considering the potential of remote sensing for a global characterisation of clouds and their interaction with the radiation field. For this purpose, the three-dimensional radiative transport (using a Monte Carlo model) and remote sensing are simulated for a number of realistic cloud structures. The latter are based on high resolution measurements (15 m horizontal resolution) of marine stratus and stratocumulus from the airborne spectrometer CASI. The development of a novel method is described that allows for the derivation of a horizontal distribution of liquid water path, of a profile of microphysics, and of a realistic cloud top geometry. Based on these cloud structures a systematic investigation of a standard remote sensing technique for the simultaneous derivation of optical thickness and effective droplet size is conducted for different sensor geometries (resolution, viewing angle). While the systematic deviation for the optical thickness of overcast pixels is always lower than 5%, the bias increases for partially covered pixels (10-30%). In contrast, the uncertainty for individual pixels can reach more than 50%. The effective radius is systematically underestimated by 3 to 5%. If the solar part of the radiation budget, e.g. the scene reflection, is determined based on these data, deviations from the actual situation between 3 and 10% do occur.

In this thesis we summarize a number of theoretical studies dealing with various properties of quantum dots. Small quantum dots with a large level spacing are very well described by the Anderson impurity model. In modern quantum dot experiments all parameters of this model can be tuned via external gate voltages. Thus, it should be possible to check our theoretical findings experimentally. We are particularly interested in temperatures $T$ smaller than the so-called Kondo temperature $T_K$, $T

This dissertation describes the development of a new numerical framework enabling the study of principal atmospheric mechanisms as well as aspects of numerical realisability that are neither easily deduced from highly optimised operational numerical weather prediction models nor idealised laboratory studies. The theoretical development and efficient numerical implementation of a generalised time-dependent coordinate transformation is demonstrated, creating a unified numerical framework for investigating the influence of upper and lower boundary conditions on atmospheric and oceanic flows. In technical terms, the dissertation also enhances the adaptivity of numerical models to boundary forcings determined by data. The theoretical development is illustrated with numerical simulations of idealised flows. An example of a practical application is given which incorporates a long-wave-approximation for a finite-amplitude free-surface upper boundary, directly relevant to ocean models. Finally, the utility of the generalised vertical coordinate in simulating stratified flows with intricate geometric, time-dependent boundary forcings is demonstrated in the direct numerical simulation of the laboratory analogue of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), the dominant variability in the equatorial stratosphere. While the laboratory experiment exhibits the principal mechanism of the QBO, and despite numerous studies of the stratospheric phenomenon, a complete understanding of the QBO eludes the efforts. On the basis of the numerical results presented in this thesis, the original explanation of the laboratory experiment is revised. The findings stress the utility of this numerical framework and further elevate the importance of the laboratory setup for its fundamental similarity to the atmosphere. A detailed study of parametric and numerical sensitivities of the oscillation is presented and implications on the successful simulation and on the existing theory of equatorial oscillations are discussed.

The elastic photoproduction of J/psi vector mesons at large values of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy 135GeV=180.6GeV)=(5.1+-0.3+-0.2)GeV^-2c^-2, b(=250.7GeV)=(5.4+-0.4+-0.2)GeV^-2c^-2. The intercept alpha_0 and slope alpha' of an effective pomeron trajectory are determined. The W_{gamma p} dependence of the b-slope gives alpha'_b=(0.17+-0.04+-0.01)GeV^-2c^-2. The W_{gamma p} dependence of the differential cross section dsigma/dt yields both parameters: alpha_0=1.21+-0.01+-0.01 and alpha'=(0.14+-0.03+-0.03)GeV^-2c^-2. The two determined slope parameters alpha'_b and alpha' are compatible within errors. Different theoretical approaches are compared to the data. The single pomeron model based on Regge theory does not describe the strong rise of sigma(W_{gamma p}) as a function of W_{gamma p}. The two pomeron model is able to describe the W_{gamma p} dependence of the cross section sigma(W_{gamma p}) within the kinematic regime of HERA, but is not able to describe the combined results of HERA and of fixed target experiments at low values of W_{gamma p}. QCD predictions using different parameterisations of the gluon distribution in the proton are also compared to the measured cross section sigma(W_{gamma p}). The predictions show a strong dependence on the gluon distribution, since the gluon distribution enters the cross section quadratically. The comparison to the measured cross section sigma(W_{gamma p}) is therefore a sensitive test for the gluon distributions, which are determined in an indirect way from inclusive measurements. While some of these analyses result in gluon distributions consistent with the J/psi measurements presented here, others can definitely be excluded.
