Yahoo said it would hand out across-the-board layoffs on December 10, and it looks like that is exactly what's going to happen. In case you work for Yahoo, and you haven't looked at a calendar in a while, that's tomorrow. Sorry.
A new report has found that 45 percent of jailed journalists around the world are Internet-based. So think about that the next time you think about taking that blogging job in China.
Japanese railway stations are experimenting with a new technology that turns footsteps into electricity and then uses that power to run ticket gates and electronic billboards. I think now's the perfect time to resurrect my Flintstone-inspired walking-powered car. Efficient and topical.
Whatever you do, don't look up the Scorpion's 1976 album Virgin Killer on Wikipedia. The page was recently banned in the U.K. after it was classified as child-porn. For the sake of society, please don't try and find out what all the fuss is about.

Hooray! The economic depression is over. Oh wait, no it's not. That's probably why last week Adobe cut 600 jobs, Intel could be cutting up to 7,000, and AT&T laid off 12,000.
The iRumor Mill is in full swing, and this time it's saying that Wal-Mart could be selling a 4GB iPhone for $99 with a two year contract sometime soon. There's a good chance this won't happen, but those of you who are interested should get in line now just in case.
Truphone has released a new mobile app that lets iPod touch users make calls to other Truphone or Google Talk users. Of course, you have to connect to a WiFi network to use it, but it's free and it's cool, so that's enough for us.
The world's second Google Android smartphone is now available for pre-order. The Agora comes in two models: not quite an iPhone and not quite an iPhone Pro.
Dell has dropped its pre-install toolbar deal with Google and signed a new deal with Microsoft to pre-install Live Search on its new laptops. Microsoft and Google are currently battling as well over a search deal with Verizon. Once that's settled, they're going to break out the corporate-sized ruler.
Facebook and YouTube have started adding support for "HD" video uploading. It won't replace Blu-Ray on your plasma screen anytime soon, but it's nice to be able to watch pointless videos in higher resolution than ever before.
Digital artists were able to bring the famed lions of Trafalgar Square to life. How? Well, if you said by projecting animated faces onto the statues, then you're right.

Say hello to the newest top-level domain on the block, .tel. The new domain serves as an information hub for all of your contact information (phone numbers, email addresses, social network usernames, etc.). You better act fast when the domains go on sale to the public though, unless you don't mind being Charles829383.tel.
Pandora's mobile app has topped Apple's list of most downloaded free iPhone apps of the year. Recently, the online music service announced that its app had past the 2 million download mark. That's certainly music to the struggling company's ears.
Vlingo has thrown its voice into the voice-activated mobile phone app ring. Unlike the one Google released a few weeks ago, Vlingo's app lets you voice auto-dial and dictate Facebook and Tweeter updates. Your move Google.
CBS has taken over Yahoo's Launchcast music service, making itself an even more formidable force in the online music business. Meanwhile, Yahoo continues to dismember itself in the hopes of stopping its financial bleeding.
In these tough economic times, even the Spendy McGee's at Google have had to make cutbacks. Shorter free lunch periods, no afternoon tea and no more solid gold chairs. I may have made up that last one, but the company's financial concerns are very real.
YouTube is cracking down on sexually suggestive content by broadening its guidelines for applying age restrictions on videos. Please verify your age to find out what the new guidelines are.
Comedy Central has launched a new comedy site where users can find videos of stand-up performances, a joke database and comedy-related blogs. And wouldn't you know it, I have nothing funny to say about it.

A team of crafty developers has successfully ported the open-source Linux OS to the iPhone and iPod touch. It doesn't support most of the devices' best love features, but it's still a major step towards an all out war between Apple and hackers everywhere.
Apple's app store has officially passed the 10,000 mark. There are plenty of interesting stats to be found at 148 Apps celebration page.
Microsoft has now sold more Xbox 360s than original Xboxes. While it's not quite 25 million, Sony has sold over 17 million PlayStation 3 consoles since its launch. So don't feel bad Sony fanboys.
Atlantic Records has become the first major record label to pull in more than half its revenue from digital content like MP3s and cellphone ring tones. I knew that buying 8 million ring tones would set more than one embarrassing record.
Nokia has given up trying to gain ground in Japan's mobile phone market and has decided to only sell its luxury Vertu brand phones there. It's a good thing for Nokia that they're doing so well in the U.S....
TiVo's new mobile site lets subscribers program their DVRs via their cellphones. It's a great way to manage your viewing schedule and to find out how truly addicted to TiVo you really are.

If you love your old Polaroid camera but you're tired of explaining to people what it is, you should check out the new Xiao digital camera with built in printer. Finally, a technology that actually makes things more convenient.

The U.S. Army plans to spend $50 million on video game technologies to train soldiers. Also, new recruits must now beat Call of Duty 4 on Veteran difficulty in order to pass basic training.(That second part might not be official military policy.)
If unsubstantiated claims received from zero official sources are to be trusted, Google has been dishing out hundreds of layoffs on the sly for months now. Such dealings could end up affecting 10,000 hypothetical employees.
Well, we can all finally get some rest now that Facebook and Twitter have given up all that buyout talk. In the end, it looks like the deal fell through due to disagreements over price. Oh, and Facebook couldn't propose the bid in under 140 characters.
Microsoft has acquired the exclusive distribution rights for the second season of the hit web show "The Guild." It's sort of an odd combination - Microsoft, the Internet and nerds - but I guess it could work.
The era of the personal computer is over. The era of the personal supercomputer has begun...in an electronics shop in London.
The great thing about robots is that they can do stuff on their own, like absolutely destroy you in Guitar Hero. Well, at least there will be good tunes when civilization crumbles.
Samsung may or may not have created a mobile device equipped with a foldable OLED display. However, there is a video of it in action, and when has a video on the Internet ever lied to us?

The Blackberry Storm has finally arrived. Is it the iPhone-killer Blackberry fans hoped it would be? Or is this one storm you'd be better off taking shelter from? Reviews are pouring in, and I'm going to stop now, because I've run out of weather puns.
SnapTell's new Explorer iPhone app lets you find info about a product simply by taking a picture of it. For some ironic fun, try taking a picture of the app's page. If it doesn't rip a hole in the space-time continuum, let me know what it turns up.
Google plans to put the final touches on its Chrome web browser by January and to start pre-loading it on new computers if they can secure a distribution deal with manufacturers. And by "if," I mean "when."
Google has also introduced SearchWiki, a new feature that lets users who are logged into their Google accounts to rearrange, add, remove and leave comments on search results. If you'd rather have your old Google back, Facesaerch has you covered.
Blizzard's World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King broke the single-day sales record for PC games with 2.8 million units sold. I'm going to go out on a limb on this one and say that this whole WOW thing is going to be huge pretty soon.
Scientists at Penn State say they have found a way to resurrect almost any animal that lived within the last 60,000 years thanks to advances in DNA-sequencing. I think I just heard Michael Crichton smack his forehead and then roll over in his grave.
Lightsabers are cool and everything, but it's not like something similar to them could ever be shrunk down and equipped to fire a laser beam that could then help fight cancer...right?

President-elect Barack Obama has inspired millions of Americans and given Israeli prime minister candidate Benjamin Netanyahu a lot of great ideas for his own campaign's website.
The BBC is putting together a show that will follow one family's technological journey through the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Since they'll only have access to tech from those eras, I'm betting that at least one family member will be brutally murdered before getting out of the 70s.

Analysts predict that Hulu could match YouTube in ad revenue next year. Of course, Hulu does give away most of its revenue to its content providers, so it won't be putting YouTube out of business anytime soon.
The SEC has charged Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban with insider trading. Unfortunately for Cuban, it has nothing to do with basketball.

Sun Microsystems says it will layoff as many as 6,000 employees and one of their top executives has stepped down. But they aren't the only ones riding high this month. For the full list of company cutbacks, check out Tech Crunch's Layoff Tracker.
President-elect Barack Obama plans to post video recordings of his weekly presidential addresses on Change.org leading up to and during his administration. Cabinet officials and other members of his staff will also post video Q&A's and interviews via video as well.
Google has released a new layer for Google Earth that lets you explore ancient Rome. You know, minus the rampant debauchery, gladiatorial slaughtering, Christian purging and such. If you're a teacher and you want to use the new layer in your new curricula, Google has a contest for you.
Ever wish you could add real-time shadowing to static pictures? Probably not, because the technology behind it is kind of crazy, but you'll still totally dig it when you see it in action.

Google has added voice and video chat to Gmail. It's nothing we haven't seen before, and it lacks some features seen in other services, but it has that certain Google charm; as in, its easy to use and super convenient.
Flu Trends, a new health initiative from Google, can predict flu outbreaks in any part of the country based on the number of flu-related Google searches in those areas.
Early reviews of the pre-beta version of Microsoft's next operating system Windows 7 have started popping up around the net. Nothing too shocking here. Some say it's a glorified Vista rehash. Others say it's a fast, user-friedly OS with a lot of potential. In other words, let's wait until it's released before we make up our minds about it.
The U.S. military has launched TroopTube, a user-generated video site specifically designed for military personnel and the civilians who love them.
DVR streaming service Slingbox plans to start letting Slingbox users stream content from their TVs to their computers over the Internet without having to use the previously required software.
Some people might say that a Super Nintendo modified to be an alarm clock is kind of cool. Well, those people are wrong...It's insanely cool!
You've probably recoiled in horror at creepy robots before, but here's one that can actually mimic you while you do it, facial expressions and all. Fellow humans, we had a good run.

In the hopes of attracting that almighty ad dollar, Facebook has started using a new ad format designed to engaged users when they sign on to the site. If you own a stalking business, it's pretty obvious where you need to start buying ads.
Are you tired of not being able to read all of those foreign language sites you subscribe to on Google Reader? Then check out Google's new translation feature.
The video game industry has seen a 21 percent drop in software sales over the past year. Perhaps removing several specific atomic bombs references from Fallout 3 will give the industry the boost it needs.
Engineers have developed a teched-out contact lens that could eventually give humans the power of bionic vision. That Magic Eye poster that's been stashed in my closet for the past 10 years is going down!
NASA engineers lost contact with the Phoenix lander on Mars over a week ago, which pretty much means its dead and will continue to freeze until it completely breaks apart. If you were ever going to feel bad for a robot, this would be the one. Poor little guy.
I've been saying it for years. The International Space Station needs a serious interior redecorating. A few more bedrooms, another kitchen perhaps, a machine that filters your pee into drinking water and, of course, a first-of-its-kind refrigerator. Nice to see NASA is finally listening to what I have to say.
If you're looking for a new carrying case for your iPhone or laptop that you'll never tire of, Better Energy System's new Tread line is for you (I'm sure the company has never heard that one before).
