France’s nuclear tests in the Sahara brought the atomic age into
Africa’s struggles for independence. Historian Chloë Mayoux of the
University of Vienna joins Mario Wasserfaller to explore the tests’
diplomatic fallout, concerns about radioactive contamination and
the competing priorities of African leaders. From Algeria and
Nigeria to Ghana, the conversation reveals a history that goes
beyond Cold War rivalries to foreground African perspectives and
relations. An English-language special edition of An der Quelle.
