  4. Mantrailing Myths and Police Tracking Reality | Dick Staal #141
️ Kynotalk #141 – with Dick StaalIn this episode, Flo talks with
**Dick Staal** about police tracking, hard surface tracking,
working dogs, puppy training, fair corrections and the difference
between teaching exercises and dealing with unwanted
behavior.Dick Staal returns to Kynotalk almost four years after
his first appearance. Since then, he has retired from police work
and now focuses more on training his own dogs, developing his
system and working with dogs for specific practical purposes.A
major part of this conversation is about tracking. Dick explains
how he started in police dog work, how his view on tracking
developed over decades, and why tracking is never truly finished.
A dog may be certified for a certain level, but difficult tracks,
hard surfaces, contaminated environments and real police work
always require further development.Flo and Dick also discuss what
is actually possible in tracking: forest tracks, hard surface
tracks, old tracks, village tracks, weather conditions,
contamination, blind tracks and double-blind work. Dick shares
why circumstances can completely change a track and why handlers
must learn to trust the dog — but only if the dog has been
trained well enough to deserve that trust.Another important topic
is the difference between tracking and mantrailing. Dick talks
about his experience testing many mantrailing teams over the
years, the risks of unconscious information, handler influence
and why blind work is essential if we want to know what the dog
is really doing. The second major part of the episode focuses on
corrections and dog training. Dick makes a clear distinction
between teaching exercises and dealing with unwanted behavior. In
his approach, learning new exercises should be positive and
clear. But when it comes to behavior such as biting, chasing,
eating things or ignoring known rules, he believes that fair
corrections can be necessary — especially if we want to raise
reliable working dogs.Flo and Dick also talk about modern animal
welfare, dog training laws, correction tools, e-collars, working
dog selection and the risk of losing important capabilities if
experienced working dog trainers are not part of the discussion.A
practical and honest episode for dog trainers, police dog
handlers, working dog handlers, sport dog handlers and everyone
interested in tracking, scent work, fair corrections and real
working dog training.Chapters00:00 Intro with Dick Staal01:10
