Description:

How do you navigate your Thai identity in a predominantly
Western society?

Jamjun, a PhD literature student at the University of Southern
California (USC), opens up about her upbringing in San Diego, her
complex relationship with her Thai mother and white American
father, and how literature helped shape her path toward becoming
a scholar.

She also reflects on why more diverse storylines are needed in
media representations of migrant communities—beyond the often
overused “trauma” narrative.

Terminology:

Luk Khrueng (ลูกครึ่ง): Literally means
“half-child”; refers to a person of mixed Thai and another
ethnicity

Wasian: A colloquial term referring to
someone of both Asian and white descent

Mestiza studies: An interdisciplinary field
that explores the culture, identity, and lived experiences of
people of mixed Indigenous and European (and sometimes other)
ancestry, particularly in Latin America

Gloria Anzaldúa (1942–2004): American
author, poet, and activist whose work examines social and
cultural marginalization
