Hey Friends, it's Flo! Welcome to 'German Bites – Sassy Snacks,'
where we discuss general but also cheeky and sometimes even
sweary German expressions. This segment will be in English
from now on to make it easier for you to understand the cultural
context and get you in on the joke. The regular episodes will
still be in German. Today’s phrase is 'Das ist mir Wurst,' which
literally translates to 'That’s sausage to me.' Before we explain
it, let’s explore its fascinating origins and how to use it. But
what does that have to do with indifference? Let’s find out!

"Das ist mir Wurst' is a playful way of saying 'I don’t care' or
'It doesn’t matter to me.' The literal translation is 'That’s
sausage to me,' which might sound strange, but here’s the idea:
In the past, butchers used to throw all the leftover scraps of
meat into sausages, regardless of quality or type. When asked
what should be done with the leftovers, the answer was often,
'Just throw it into the sausage!' This practice made sausages a
symbol of indifference, as it didn’t really matter what went into
them.

"Pizza oder Pasta? Mir ist das Wurst." (Pizza or pasta? I don’t
care.)"Welchen Film schauen wir? Mir ist das Wurst." (Which movie
should we watch? I don’t care.)

Now you know what to say when something doesn’t matter to you at
all – 'Das ist mir Wurst.' It’s a simple, fun way to express
indifference like a true German. See you on Sunday for our
regular episode. Until then – tschüssiiiiii!
