At AERO 2026 in Friedrichshafen, Ilkay Özkisaoglu sits down with
Mario Fakour, VP Program Management VoloXPro at Volocopter—one of
the leading pioneers in electric vertical take-off and landing
(eVTOL) technology. The interview offers exclusive insights into
how urban air mobility is transitioning from vision to
reality.
Volocopter’s message is clear: the future of aviation is already
being built today. The company aims to bring emission-free air
mobility into everyday life, enabling a new form of
transportation that is not only cleaner but also more direct,
efficient, and accessible for individual users.
The discussion highlights two key platforms. The VoloCity,
designed as an urban air taxi, is currently undergoing EASA
certification and targets intra-city mobility. In parallel, the
VoloXPro is positioned for pilot training, aviation clubs, and
private use cases within the ultralight aircraft segment. [
A central theme of the interview is the critical role of advanced
materials. Both aircraft rely heavily on carbon composite
structures—underscoring the importance of lightweight engineering
in achieving the performance, efficiency, and sustainability
required for electric flight systems.
Volocopter also emphasizes its European industrial footprint.
Based in Bruchsal, Germany, the company is establishing one of
the few dedicated eVTOL production sites in Europe, positioning
itself strategically within the aerospace ecosystem.
Certification remains a key milestone on the path to market.
While the VoloCity follows EASA regulations, the VoloXPro will be
certified under the German Ultraleight Association (DULV). The
company aims to complete certification of the VoloXPro by the end
of 2026, with start of production planned for 2027.
Despite ongoing developments in autonomy, Volocopter’s current
focus is on piloted aircraft. While remote and autonomous
capabilities are technologically feasible, certified manned
operations represent the immediate priority for market
entry.
This interview is part of the #Composites360onTour series, which
explores the intersection of materials, structures, and
engineering decisions shaping the future of aviation. It becomes
evident that the transformation of aerospace is not driven by
propulsion alone, but by the integration of advanced materials,
manufacturing processes, and system innovation.
