China’s new dairy tariffs of up to 42.7% on European products are
reshaping global milk markets - but not in the way many expected.
While EU exporters face severe barriers, U.S. suppliers see
little upside, as their exports focus on whey rather than the
cheese products targeted by the tariffs. Meanwhile, New Zealand
benefits from tariff-free access under its free trade agreement,
and China’s own milk production continues to rise, fueled by
imported Western genetics. With declining birth rates and
