This article examines the financial impact of genomic selection
since 2008, showing how it has nearly doubled the rate of genetic
progress in milk production and profitability. Over a herd’s
lifetime, this can translate into hundreds of thousands of
dollars in added value. However, the analysis also highlights
growing risks, including increased inbreeding and declining
fertility and health. Using Canada’s modernized LPI—with new
subindexes for reproduction and environmental impact—the article
makes one thing clear: genomics provides speed, but strategic
balance determines whether that speed creates lasting profit or
