The proliferation of Thai massage parlors and restaurants in
urban areas of the Western world has influenced perceptions of
Thailand and its people. Particularly, Thai women and trans
women, who predominantly work in the service sector, face
socio-cultural stigmatization associated i.a., with body work,
hospitality, and sex labor.
The upcoming exhibition titled "In Nobody’s Service - The Stories
of Love, Sex, Marriage, and Care for Thai and Filipina Bodies in
the German Bundesrepublik," at Galerie Wedding in Berlin, aims to
analyze and deconstruct this phenomenon from various artistic
perspectives. In this episode, I speak with some of the artists
who will be presenting their work.
Sarnt Utamachote, the curator of the show in collaboration
with the collective un.thai.tled, shares insights into the
process behind the exhibition and its multifaceted topic.
They also explore the motivations behind Thai and Filipina
women and trans women migrating to the West.
Filmmaker and anthropologist Rosalia Namsai Engchuan delves
into the history of Thai massage, explaining why it was never
intended to be a 'service product' and how it correlates with
mass tourism in Thailand.
Furthermore, performer and dancer Alice Raksa Seelapan shares
her personal experiences working at a Thai massage parlor and
discusses how this work has influenced her perceptions of the
body, mental health, and sexuality.
Additionally, painter Natthapong Samakkaew recounts his
experiences researching sex brothels for his artwork.
Through their use of archive materials, interviews, films,
installations, performances, and drawings, these artists aim to
challenge preconceived notions of Thai and Filipina femininity in
the West, while also providing a healing space for the Southeast
Asian diaspora.
