Today's guest on the show is Warwick Powell, a senior fellow of the
Taihe Institute in Beijing as well as an adjunct professor at the
Queensland University of Technology, professor Powell offers a deep
historical context on the Taiwan issue, framing it as an unresolved
civil war between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the
Republic of China (ROC). Powell explains that the conflict stems
from a civil war in the late 1940s, when the ROC retreated to
Taiwan after the PRC's victory on the mainland. Powell emphasizes
the complexity of this situation, noting that it is often
misunderstood, particularly in the West, where Taiwan is seen in
terms of military conflict rather than as part of a civil war that
