Interview: Tanya Notley on the critical issue of media literacy

The Bondi stabbings, the Wakely church attack, the Voice
referendum, the war in the Middle East... They're just some
examples of news stories that have sparked conversations that go
beyond the events themselves. We're talking about the information
we’re being fed: Is it harmful? Misleading? Persuasive? And what’s
the intent behind it? This is all about the rise of misinformation
and disinformation and the growing concern over how we, as a
society, can make sense of what’s true and what’s not, especially
regarding our kids. To mark media literacy week, we sit down with
Associate Professor Tanya Notley. We came across her through our
work on Newshounds—our media literacy program for primary school
kids. She dives into the problem of misinformation, the tricky task
of solving it, and her frustration with how slow progress has been.
