Peter Godfrey-Smith is a professor in the School of History and
Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney. He has also
taught at Stanford University and Harvard University. Among other
topics, he has researched the philosophy of biology and mind, and
is very well-known for his book Other Minds: The Octopus, The
Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness (FSG, 2016). In this
episode, Peter and Robinson discuss that book, as well as his
latest, Living on Earth (William Collins, 2024). More
particularly, they discuss cuttlefish, octopuses, consciousness,
metaethics, and animal welfare.
