"The Turing test is the idea that... It’s basically a test to see
whether a machine can behave in a manner indistinguishable from a
normal human being, at least in a verbal conversation over, say,
text messaging and the like. And Turing thought that eventually,
we’ll have machines that pass this test, that is they’re
indistinguishable from, say, another human interlocutor over hours
of conversational testing. Then he didn’t say at that point then
machines can think. What he said was, at that point, the question
of whether machines can think becomes basically meaningless and
I’ve provided an operational definition to substitute for it. So,
once they pass this test, he says, 'That’s good enough for me.' " -
