How did Pele Stop A War In Nigeria?

When we say Pele transcended football, we really mean it. The man
was more than just a sports figure. He was not just a Brazilian
footballer, he was a world citizen. And it’s not just us saying
this, the UN elected him citizen of the world back in 1977.

Pele did so much for the world during his lifetime and that’s how
we know he will never be forgotten. There’s the obvious point of
having entertained and motivated millions with his many goals,
skills, and dribbles on the field of play, but even outside
football, he did affect the lives of many.

Little wonder he was given the International Peace Award in 1978
and elected goodwill ambassador by UNESCO in 1993.

You know what? Let’s look at one of these examples of Pele
transcending football and being a symbol of peace. Our older
Nigerian or maybe even African subscribers will remember this
one. When Pele was said to have stopped a war in Nigeria.
