This Thesis deals with the metamorphic and structural development of the La Paz Crystalline Complex (Ortega-Gutierrez 1982), which extends south of the city of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, to the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. The results presented are data on the development of structures and metamorphism based on detailed geologic mapping. This includes the succession of metamorphic isograds, pT-paths for structural units and the relation of the two. It allows to explain the development of the crystalline complex in light of the specific tectonic situation. The most important new result is that the whole complex does not make up one distinct tectonostratigraphic terrane, as supposed previously (Sedlock et al. 1993, Gastil 1991, Beck 1991 and references therein), but that the complex is separated by a SSW-NNE striking fault. This fault juxtaposes rocks of different origin and with different metamorphic history. Intrusives in the north-western area are of relatively primitive M-type, in the south-eastern area, intrusives show a higher degree of crustal contamination (Schaaf et al. 2000). The structural work presented here shows that the fault already described in literature as the ‘La Paz Fault’, but interpreted differently (Aranda-Gómez & Pérez-Venzor 1989, Sedlock et al. 1993, Schaaf et al. 2000) is indeed the structural feature described above. Metamorphic contrast across the fault is minor, but an anticlockwise pT-path could be constructed for the footwall. Comparison with new results from the northern part of Baja California (Johnson et al. 1999, Schmidt & Paterson 2002, Ortega-Rivera 2003) shows that the La Paz Crystalline Complex is indeed a part of the Peninsular Ranges Batholith (Gastil 1983, 1991). The separation into a western and an eastern part is characteristic for this complex and can be compared to the geochemical, metamorphic and structural characteristics presented here. PT-determinations were conducted for the overall low-pressure metamorphism using several methods: construction of petrogenetic grids for metapelitic rocks (Spear et al. 1999, Pattison et al. 2002), different geothermobarometers (e. g. garnet/biotite, Holdaway 2000, GASP, Holdaway 2001) and a relatively new approach to calculate pseudosections through thermodynamically modelled systems with known bulk-composition (Connolly & Petrini 2002, Tinkham et al. 2001). The pseudosections are a very useful graphic tool to represent modelled metamorphic mineral parageneses, which can be easily compared with actual measurements (Microscope, Electron Microprobe).

Coal fires cause severe environmental and economic problems. Although satellite remote sensing has been used successfully to detect coal fires, a satellite data based concept that can quantify the majority of the detected coal fires is still missing. Recently, the determination of fire radiative energy (FRE) has been introduced as a new remote sensing tool to quantify forest and grassland fires. This thesis tests the concept of remotely measured FRE, with a view to ascertaining its potential applicability to coal fires. It contains an investigation of a new generation of satellite instruments, including the operational Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) instrument, the experimental Bi-spectral InfraRed Detection (BIRD) satellite sensor and the experimental Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), which explores the potential of these sensors to determine coal fire radiative energy (CFRE). Additionally, based on the results of this analysis, the thesis presents a new, automated ETM and ASTER data based algorithm, adapted to quantify coal fires in semi-arid to arid regions in northern China. Field observations carried out in September 2002 and 2003 in three coalfields in northern China (the Wuda, Gulaben and Ruqigou coalfields) demonstrate that coal fire related, surface anomalies are significantly cooler than forest and grassland fires. The theoretical investigation of the ASTER, ETM and BIRD instruments outlines the fact that the thermal infrared (TIR) or mid infrared (MIR) spectral channels of the ASTER, ETM and BIRD instrument are particularly effective in registering these ‘warm spots’, whilst the short wave infrared (SWIR) spectral range is, however, insufficiently sensitive to be able to register spectral coal fire radiances. The commonly used bi-spectral fire quantification method (Dozier, 1981) can be applied to BIRD data in order to quantify relatively large and / or hot coal fires. However, existing FRE retrieval approaches fail to quantify coal fires via ASTER and ETM instrument data. In this thesis, a new CFRE retrieval method is presented, which links the fire and background TIR spectral radiances to the CFRE through an empirical relationship. This newly developed TIR method is applied to visually detected fire clusters from night-time ASTER data, and from both day- and night-time ETM data, taken from the three study coalfields in northern China. The ASTER and ETM CFRE values, calculated via the TIR method, are compared to CFRE estimates from BIRD data, calculated via the existing bi-spectral method. Despite the different spatial resolution and spectral properties of the ETM, ASTER and BIRD instruments, CFRE computed from ASTER, ETM and BIRD data show good correlations with one another. However, CFRE retrievals from daytime data appear to be very undependable to background temperature variations, while CFRE, estimated from night-time data, appears to be relatively stable. A comparison between night-time ETM-derived CFRE and the figures given by local mining authorities for total coal fire induced, coal loss estimates in the Wuda coalfield gives a clear indication that the overall dimension of the coal fire problematic can in fact be approximated via satellite data CFRE retrievals. It is thus expected that CFRE derived from night-time satellite data will become a crucial tool in obtaining reliable, quantitative information for coal fires. A multi-temporal comparison of CFRE retrievals from night-time BIRD and ETM data, covering the Ruqigou and Wuda coalfields, indicates that only major shifts or activity changes in coal fire induced, surface anomalies can be observed by means of these data. These results, which could only partially be verified by field observations, indicate that ETM or BIRD data can be used to monitor major changes in coal fire related, surface anomalies. These data however cannot entirely replace detailed field observations, especially in case of smaller and / or cooler coal fire related, surface anomalies.

In the last decades microwave remote sensing has proven its capability to provide valuable information about the land surface. New sensor generations as e.g. ENVISAT ASAR are capable to provide frequent imagery with an high information content. To make use of these multiple imaging capabilities, sophisticated parameter inversion and assimilation strategies have to be applied. A profound understanding of the microwave interactions at the land surface is therefore essential. The objective of the presented work is the analysis and quantitative description of the backscattering processes of vegetated areas by means of microwave backscattering models. The effect of changing imaging geometries is investigated and models for the description of bare soil and vegetation backscattering are developed. Spatially distributed model parameterisation is realized by synergistic coupling of the microwave scattering models with a physically based land surface process model. This enables the simulation of realistic SAR images, based on bioand geophysical parameters. The adequate preprocessing of the datasets is crucial for quantitative image analysis. A stringent preprocessing and sophisticated terrain geocoding and correction procedure is therefore suggested. It corrects the geometric and radiometric distortions of the image products and is taken as the basis for further analysis steps. A problem in recently available microwave backscattering models is the inadequate parameterisation of the surface roughness. It is shown, that the use of classical roughness descriptors, as the rms height and autocorrelation length, will lead to ambiguous model parameterisations. A new two parameter bare soil backscattering model is therefore recommended to overcome this drawback. It is derived from theoretical electromagnetic model simulations. The new bare soil surface scattering model allows for the accurate description of the bare soil backscattering coefficients. A new surface roughness parameter is introduced in this context, capable to describe the surface roughness components, affecting the backscattering coefficient. It is shown, that this parameter can be directly related to the intrinsic fractal properties of the surface. Spatially distributed information about the surface roughness is needed to derive land surface parameters from SAR imagery. An algorithm for the derivation of the new surface roughness parameter is therefore suggested. It is shown, that it can be derived directly from multitemporal SAR imagery. Starting from that point, the bare soil backscattering model is used to assess the vegetation influence on the signal. By comparison of the residuals between measured backscattering coefficients and those predicted by the bare soil backscattering model, the vegetation influence on the signal can be quantified. Significant difference between cereals (wheat and triticale) and maize is observed in this context. It is shown, that the vegetation influence on the signal can be directly derived from alternating polarisation data for cereal fields. It is dependant on plant biophysical variables as vegetation biomass and water content. The backscattering behaviour of a maize stand is significantly different from that of other cereals, due to its completely different density and shape of the plants. A dihedral corner reflection between the soil and the stalk is identified as the major source of backscattering from the vegetation. A semiempirical maize backscattering model is suggested to quantify the influences of the canopy over the vegetation period. Thus, the different scattering contributions of the soil and vegetation components are successfully separated. The combination of the bare soil and vegetation backscattering models allows for the accurate prediction of the backscattering coefficient for a wide range of surface conditions and variable incidence angles. To enable the spatially distributed simulation of the SAR backscattering coefficient, an interface to a process oriented land surface model is established, which provides the necessary input variables for the backscattering model. Using this synergistic, coupled modelling approach, a realistic simulation of SAR images becomes possible based on land surface model output variables. It is shown, that this coupled modelling approach leads to promising and accurate estimates of the backscattering coefficients. The remaining residuals between simulated and measured backscatter values are analysed to identify the sources of uncertainty in the model. A detailed field based analysis of the simulation results revealed that imprecise soil moisture predictions by the land surface model are a major source of uncertainty, which can be related to imprecise soil texture distribution and soil hydrological properties. The sensitivity of the backscattering coefficient to the soil moisture content of the upper soil layer can be used to generate soil moisture maps from SAR imagery. An algorithm for the inversion of soil moisture from the upper soil layer is suggested and validated. It makes use of initial soil moisture values, provided by the land surface process model. Soil moisture values are inverted by means of the coupled land surface backscattering model. The retrieved soil moisture results have an RMSE of 3.5 Vol %, which is comparable to the measurement accuracy of the reference field data. The developed models allow for the accurate prediction of the SAR backscattering coefficient. The various soil and vegetation scattering contributions can be separated. The direct interface to a physically based land surface process model allows for the spatially distributed modelling of the backscattering coefficient and the direct assimilation of remote sensing data into a land surface process model. The developed models allow for the derivation of static and dynamic landsurface parameters, as e.g. surface roughness, soil texture, soil moisture and biomass from remote sensing data and their assimilation in process models. They are therefore reliable tools, which can be used for sophisticated practice oriented problem solutions in manifold manner in the earth and environmental sciences.

This thesis reports petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical data that constrain the hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization in the Um El Tuyor area, SE Egypt. In order to distinguish the characteristics and envisage the genesis of gold mineralization in the study area, insights into the geologic context, structural evolution and geochemistry of the country rocks are provided. The geochemical investigations have been integrated with field and petrographic relationships, along with Landsat (TM) imagery interpretations to better constraints on the tectonic setting of the basement complex in the study area. The particular geographic location near the intersection of two major high strain zones, namely the Allaqi-Heiani suture and Hamisana Shear Zone, played a crucial role in the deformation history of the Um Tuyor area. The basement complex cropping out in the Um El Tuyor area is part of the Neoproterozoic Allaqi-Heiani ophiolitic belt, comprising allochtonous ophiolitic thrust slices and detached sheets, island arc volcano-sedimentary-plutonic assemblages, and syn-orogenic and post-orogenic intrusions. The ophiolitic rocks exhibit field and geochemical characteristics that make them akin to the supra-subduction zone ophiolites, formed most likely in a back-arc basin. The island arc assemblage comprises mainly calc-alkaline metavolcanic-plutonic rocks and back-arc pelitic metasediments. Early calc-alkaline granite intrusions tapered along the foliation and thrust planes during the orogenic episodes, whereas less fractionated tholeiitic olivine gabbro and peraluminous monzogranite encompass a course of post-orogenic plutonism evolved in a within plate setting. An early period of crustal shortening (Dm) involved transportation and overriding of huge ophiolitic sheets from the north to south is manifested by major thrust faults and imbricate ophiolitic thrust slices. Regional folds and pervasive foliation cleavage signify a NE-SW compressional regime (D2) superimposed on the thrust fabrics. A third deformation increment is indicated by the presence of abundant NNW-trending major folds and left-lateral faults superimposed on the older structural fabrics (D3). D4 records an episode of transcurrent deformation yielded slip reactivation of the pre-existing NW-trending faults and formation of discrete shear zones, one of which accommodates gold mineralization in the study area. Finally, a weak shear strain (D5) is indicated by the intersecting fault and joint trends traversing the post-orogenic rocks. Regional metamorphism was coeval with deformation, and peaked under conditions of amphibolite facies during D2. Geothermobarometry calculations point to temperatures of 534-561oC and pressure of 5.26-6.20 kbar for the peak of the metamorphic path of Um El Tuyor basement. Gold is mainly confined to the quartz veins and less commonly to narrow domains of the next quartz-sericite alteration zones. Field, microscopic and microprobe observations suggest that hydrothermal alteration in the Um El Tuyor mine area was post-peak metamorphism, and syn-kinematic with local shearing. The main auriferous veins in the Um El Tuyor mine area consist of massive, partially recrystallized, or laminated quartz ±carbonate. The quartz-carbonate veins are essentially fault-fill bodies, which have been fractured and re-filled with milky to grey laminated quartz in later stages of the geothermal system. The laminated quartz veins contain narrow elongate slivers of the host pelitic rocks (composed essentially of chrorite-sericite-sulphides±graphite), assumed to have been peeled off and incorporated during incremental (crack-seal) vein growth. vii Gold occurs as inclusions or within the lattice in arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite, commonly in association with subordinate sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite in the auriferous quartz veins. Another, high fineness type of gold fills microfractures in sulphides and quartz, and/or occurs as dispersed blebs and globules in domains of pervasive alteration, particularly where sericite and carbonate are intergrown. In the mine area, a metal zonation extends from an inner Fe-As-Zn-Au ±Pb±Ag±Te bearing veins through an intermediate Fe-As-Cu rich wallrocks to a distal halo enriched in Fe-Cu-Co, and Ni. A three stage hydrothermal alteration model (initial, transitional and advanced) is proposed for the Um El Tuyor ore-forming hydrothermal system, on basis of the field and microscopic observations and the electron microprobe data. The initial stage involved hydrolysis of the wallrocks in presence of a near acid fluid, whose pH was buffered by the wallrock mineralogy. The transitional stage involved also hydrolysis reactions, but was dominated by carbonatization, sulphidation and redox reactions. The latter reduced the interacting fluids, particularly where the fluid : rock ratio was low and provided favourable conditions for gold deposition. It is interpreted that sulphidation has affected the gold solubility via changes in oxygen fugacity through redox reactions. The advanced stage was most likely a phase of intense sericitization (after chlorite), which consumed K+, liberated H+, and buffered the solution pH. Cation-exchange reactions were limited to the time when favoured Na+ activity and temperature conditions promoted deposition of albite. Sulphidation remained operating through this stage, and the un-buffered conditions were locally attained under high fluid/rock ratios. Compositional zoning of the auriferous pyrite and arsenopyrite crystals, along with the presence of patchy pyrrhotite and sphalerite inclusions in these crystals, and the absence of these features in pyrite and arsenopyrite of the late sulphide assemblage may imply incipient low oxygen fugacity conditions during gold deposition. Further, compositional zoning of the large arsenian pyrite crystals, from barren cores to auriferous margins, is considered as a function of redox reactions involving oxidation of Au and reduction of As. Fluid inclusion studies revealed heterogeneous entrapping of immiscible aqueous and carbonic fluids in the Um El Tuyor auriferous quartz veins. Criteria including the primary and secondary modes of occurrence of the carbonic inclusions, coexistence of inclusions with carbonic and aqueous fluids of variable relative proportions, densities, filling degrees, partial homogenization temperatures, and bulk compositions are considered evocative for phase separation as gold deposition mechanism in the Um El Tuyor auriferous quartz veins. The initially homogenous ore fluid was likely a low salinity aqueous-carbonic solution (±1-2 mol% CH4 or N2), which started to separate into two phases and precipitate gold when conditions attained ~340°C at ~1.5 kbar (at depth of ~6 km under lithostatic condition). Destabilization of gold-sulphur complexes through interplay of cooling, redox state variation, pH changes, and decrease in sulphur fugacity should have contributed in gold deposition in the auriferous veins. The entire gold-base metal mineralization and quartz veining event extended over conditions of 170-429oC at 0.9-2.1 kbar respectively, equivalent to depths of 3-8 km and compatible with crustal conditions of greenschist metamorphism and brittle–ductile transition. This wide range of pressure probably represents the total fluid pressure regime within the shear zone from the formation of the auriferous quartz veins to periods of continuous pressure decrease during uplift, including a sudden pressure decrease occurred as a consequence of incremental opening of the fissure, followed by filling by newly deposited quartz.

The drift history of Gondwana following the break-up of Rodinia (or perhaps Pannotia) to the amalgamation into Pangaea has great implications in many disciplines in Earth sciences, but remains largely unknown. Among the apparent polar wander (APW) paths published for Gondwana in the last few decades, large discrepancies exist (sometimes up to thousands of kilometres). The mid Palaeozoic segment of the APW path is particularly problematic, and two primary schools of thought arise. Some authors favour a Silurian – Devonian loop in their APW path passing through southern South America (on a reconstruction of Gondwana), whereas others draw a path directly through Africa during this period. The main controversy stems essentially from whether or not palaeomagnetic data from eastern Australia are incorporated in order to compensate for the lack of mid Palaeozoic data. Determining whether the terranes of the Southern Tasmanides are (para-)autochthonous or allochthonous in origin is therefore of crucial importance and a matter of intense debate. The aim of the work presented herein is to palaeomagnetically define the positions of these terranes throughout the Palaeozoic in order to better constrain the complex tectonic history of this region and to help clarifying the APW path of Gondwana. The construction of an APW path is discussed herein. An attempt is made to determine whether only “objective” criteria can be employed to select data used to draw an APW path. However, it is shown that the palaeomagnetic database has not enough entries. Subjective data selection must be introduced leading to two end-members: the X-type and the Y-type, thought to be best illustrated by the X-path proposed by Bachtadse & Briden (1991) and the Y-path proposed by Schmidt et al. (1990). These two models are, therefore, used in the discussion of the results obtained for this study. The Southern Tasmanides had a complex tectonic history with several orogenic events throughout the Palaeozoic. The sampling coverage carried out for this study comprises fifty localities (289 sites, 1576 cores, 3969 specimens; see table 1, pages 54-55) distributed along an east-west transect across most of the subdivisions of the Southern Tasmanides. The sampled localities are gathered in three main areas: the Broken Hill area, the Mount Bowen area, and the Molong area, which are situated where no published palaeomagnetic studies were previously available providing, therefore, new information. Sampling and laboratory procedures have been carried out using standard techniques. In particular, detailed stepwise thermal demagnetisation, principal component analysis, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and rock magnetic measurements have been systematically employed. The routine measurement of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility allowed drawing the first maps of the magnetic fabrics throughout the region. A strong correlation between the magnetic fabrics and the main tectonic structures corroborates the existence of cross-structures (E-W) in the Southern Tasmanides. The directions of magnetisation obtained yielded much information, despite poor quality. The effects of weathering are deep, intense and widespread. For example, most of the samples from the Mount Arrowsmith Formation (localities ARR & ARO) and the Funeral Creek Limestone (FUN) in the Broken Hill area (western New South Wales) are totally remagnetised, as well as some from the Mitchell Formation (MIT) in the Molong area (eastern New South Wales). Secondary magnetisations are also largely responsible for the bad results obtained in most of the fifty localities studied. Intermediate directions of magnetisation are common and often result in significant data scattering, as illustrated for instance by results from the Kandie Tank Limestone (KAN; Broken Hill area) or the Ambone and Ural Volcanics (HOP, BOW, SHE; Mount Bowen area). In general, it has not been possible to precise the remagnetisation process leading to those scattering. Nevertheless, a major remagnetisation event, probably thermo-chemical in origin, has been also recognised. This event is thought to be Oligocene in age and triggered by changes in geothermal gradient prior to the onset of hot spot volcanism in the Molong area. The existence of Jurassic overprints are also suggested, in particular in the Broken Hill area, possibly in association of intrusion of mafic dykes. All other magnetic components described herein are considered Palaeozoic in age, but further constraints on age are very difficult to establish since field tests are most often not significant. Palaeopoles obtained from three localities, however, are believed to correspond to primary magnetisations. The pole from the Late Cambrian Cupala Creek Formation (CUP), confirmed by a positive unconformity test, implies that this zone can be regarded fixed relative to the craton since the Late Cambrian. In the Early Devonian Mount Daubeny Formation (DAU), the applied fold test, contact test and conglomerate test indicate the primary origin of the magnetisation carried by haematite. The corresponding pole (DAU) is, however, significantly distinct from the VGP deduced from the Early Devonian Ural Volcanics (MER) showing that at least one of the two localities has been rotated. The MER pole agrees with the remagnetisation pole associated with the Cupala Creek Formation, and favours the X-type of APW path proposed by Bachtadse & Briden (1991) for Gondwana. The outcome of this agreement contradicts the Y-type path and the existence of a Silurian – Devonian loop mainly anchored on the Early Devonian Snowy River Volcanics pole obtained by Schmidt et al. (1987). Invocation of terrane rotation, arising possibly from a pull-apart basin, may explain the discrepancy between the pole from Mount Daubeny Formation and the X-path. The most significant finding of this study is the widespread terrane rotation. This conclusion is based upon the inability of intermediate directions of magnetisation, alternate APW path for Gondwana, true polar wander or non-dipole field contribution to correctly explain the distribution of these new data. Consequently, one has to admit that block translation and rotation occurred in the Southern Tasmanides in the first half of the Palaeozoic Era and perhaps up to the Early Carboniferous. A possible scenario concerning the tectonic arrangement of blocks in the Southern Tasmanides is presented in conclusion. This palinspastic model involves block translation in the Siluro-Devonian, and rotation in the Early and more probably Middle Devonian, with late tectonic displacements and rotations in the South-Western Belt of the Lachlan Orogen in the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous.

The principles of capillary barriers are well known from many laboratory studies. A limited number of large-scale applications are known, in particular for the sealing of past pollution and demolition waste. This study investigates the suitability of a capillary barrier for the sealing of a municipal landfill. Laboratory tests have shown the fundamental applicability of the selected materials. The sealing effect of the material combination as a capillary barrier was examined in a large scale tipping trough under step increasing hydraulic load and two differential slopes. The materials showed drain capacities suitable for an effective capillary barrier. For a long-term study under natural weather conditions, two experimental fields with integrated large scale lysimeters and slopes of 10 % and 26 % have been constructed on site at the landfill. The lysimeter data of three subsequent years were used for the analysis. After the growth of a closed cover of vegetation the surface runoff was negligible. Only in wet years it exceeded 2 % of the annual precipitation. In 2000 and 2001 the evapotranspiration was between 55 % and 65 %. In the very wet year 2002, however, it was significantly below 50 %. The predominant part of the lysimeter runoff was drained by the capillary layer. Only heavy precipitation caused a relevant drain into the capillary block. Except for the very wet year 2002 the effectiveness of the whole system exceeded 95 % of the annual precipitation. As expected the efficiency of the steeper lysimeter clearly surpassed 95 %. In order to verify the possibility to reduce the effort for the experimental determination of the efficacy of the capillary barrier by numerical simulations, it was tried to calculate the measured results by numerical models for the water balance layer and the capillary barrier. The results show that in principle a realistic prediction is possible. However, a reliable prediction of the measured results can only be achieved by using parameters that were calculated by inverse modeling for the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. Because of the high sensitivity of the model, calculations with parameters predicted by standard methods did not lead to plausible results, but overestimated the effectiveness of the capillary barrier. Therefore it is not advised to substitute large scale tipping experiments by numerical modeling. Although the capillary barrier is not gas proof, the closed water coating above the boundary to the capillary block largely restricts the movement of gas. Laboratory experiments resulted in very low permeability for gas through an aqueous capillary barrier. Measurements at the experimental fields showed that the capillary barrier significantly reduces the emission of gas at the surface compared to the non-sealed landfill surface. However, under adverse air pressure conditions low gas emissions are still measurable. Considering the present investigations, the capillary barrier is a competitive and secure alternative especially for the fracture-prone clay liner. For demolition waste it can be used as single sealing. For municipal waste, as in the underlying landfill of Bayreuth, the combination with an additional sealing element, e. g. a synthetic liner is recommended.
