The education at the veterinary college in Munich in assessment of
graduated veterinarians In view of the changes in the situation of
veterinarian profession in Germany, the aim of the present survey
was to record the strong and weak points of the undergraduate
education at the veterinary college in Munich. For this purpose, a
questionnaire was sent to 897 veterinarians who had graduated from
the veterinary college in Munich in the years 1992 to 1996 and also
were living in Germany. The results are based on the statements of
315 returned questionnaires (35,1 %). All answers were evaluated by
using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. The evaluation showed that the
questioned persons criticise mostly the lack of business management
elements in the curriculum, and that there is not enough practical
training. The veterinarians´ main concern was to improve the
education in the fields of management as well as biological
medicine and clinical subjects. These results may be influenced by
the fact that majority of the respondents work in private practice.
Listing of entry level skills were also requested. The respondents
included clinical examination of animals, venipuncture- and
injection -techniques as well as basic skills in surgery,
diagnostic imaging (X-ray, ultrasound), and communication with
pet-owners. The implementation of the changes in the curriculum
proposed by the veterinarians, especially the intensification of
practical clinical training, would require a major restructuring of
the undergraduate curriculum. The changes in the curriculum
proposed by the “Arbeitskreis Studienreform des 23. Deutschen
Tierärztetages” seem to be necessary to improve the veterinary
curriculum in Germany.
