In April a fundamental reform of the "Common European Asylum
System" was adopted by the European Parliament. The core elements
of the reform are asylum procedures to be carried out as quickly
and "efficiently" as possible directly at the external borders, so
that asylum seekers can be deported to their countries of origin
and to so-called "safe third countries". Especially if they come
from countries with a low chance of being accepted. The EU-Turkey
deal of 18 March 2016 can be seen as a prototype for this third
country regulation. Sybille Straubinger talks with Neva Öztürk, a
Turkish lawyer and assistant professor at the Faculty of Law at
Ankara University, about the effects of the EU-Turkey deal and the
outsourcing of asylum policy.
