The Global Contemporary. Art Worlds After 1989


Globalization as a phase in the geo-political transformation of
the world is at once a transformation of art – of the conditions
of its production, and possibilities of its diffusion and
dissemination and presence. At the same time, artists, and above
all the institutions of art, are faced with the questions as to
the extent to which the concept global can and must be thought –
and how this reflects back on its own methods of working. By
means of artistic approaches and documentary materials, the
exhibition The Global Contemporary. Art Worlds After 1989
examines the way in which globalization, both with its pervasive
mechanisms of the market and its utopias of networking and
generosity, impacts upon the various spheres of artistic
production and reception. The critical analysis of the key
institutions and dispositives of the art world seeks to
illustrate the manner in which globaliza tion has both shaped and
itself become a theme in artistic production that intentionally
creates and reviews its own conditions and parameters. With The
Global Contemporary. Art Worlds after 1989 the ZKM | Karlsruhe,
as a utopian factory and work place in the best sense of the
meaning, itself plans to thematize these conditions, which also
influence everyday life beyond the art world: to make the museum
itself a site of contemporaneity – a place in which local
experiences of time subvert the unity of the new universal time.


Artist Statement


I make artworks in order to understand how cultural and political
authority is produced and regulated through diverse visual
practices. I work with photography, video, and installation to
stage counter-narratives that question the iconography,
vocabulary, material culture, and protocols of dominant
ideologies. In the prevailing contemporary belief system, I take
a critical interest in globalization. I examine the way that
globalized entities perpetuate myths of a synchronized,
impartial, and frictionless world-space while marginalizing the
exclusions, exceptions, and contradictions that haunt any attempt
at establishing a global picture. My approach is to contaminate
material that claims to be universal with traces of historical
context, cultural perspective, and socio-economic reality. As a
result, my artistic research also documents histories of
encounters between cultural identities at the level of trade,
urbanism, and warfare.

Die Globalisierung als eine Phase geopolitischer Wandlung der
Welt ist zugleich eine Wandlung der Kunst, ihrer
Produktionsbedingungen und der Möglichkeiten ihrer Verbreitung
und Präsenz. Zugleich stehen die KünstlerInnen und vor allem die
Institutionen der Kunst vor der Frage, inwieweit Kunst global
gedacht werden kann und muss – und wie sich dies auf ihre eigenen
Arbeitsweisen niederschlägt. Die Ausstellung The Global
Contemporary. Kunstwelten nach 1989 untersucht mittels
künstlerischer Positionen und dokumentarischer Materialien, wie
die Globalisierung mit ihren dominanten Marktmechanismen
einerseits und ihren Utopien der Vernetzung und Freizügigkeit
andererseits auf die unterschiedlichen Sphären der
Kunstproduktion und -rezeption einwirkt. Diese Auseinandersetzung
mit den maßgeblichen Institutionen und Dispositiven der Kunstwelt
soll abbilden, auf welche Weise Globalisierung Kunst prägt und
zugleich zum Thema künstlerischer Produktion wird, die keineswegs
ohne Bewusstsein ihrer eigenen Bedingungen und Parameter erzeugt
und rezipiert wird. Als eine im besten Sinne utopische Fabrik
will das ZKM | Karlsruhe mit The Global Contemporary diese
Bedingungen, die auch den Alltag jenseits der Kunstwelten prägen,
selbst zur Diskussion stellen und aus dem Museum einen Ort des
Zeitgenössischen machen, in dem lokale Zeiterfahrung die Einheit
der neuen Weltzeit unterläuft.


Artist Statement


Ich mache Kunst, um zu verstehen, wie mittels unterschiedlicher
visueller Methoden kulturelle und politische Autorität erzeugt
und bestimmt wird. Ich arbeite mit Fotografie, Video und
Installationen, um Gegenerzählungen zu inszenieren, die die
Ikonografie, das Vokabular, die materielle Kultur und die
Protokolle vorherrschender Ideologien hinterfragen. Im Rahmen des
gegenwärtigen prävalenten Glaubenssystems setze ich mich kritisch
mit der Globalisierung auseinander. Ich untersuche, wie
globalisierte Entitäten die Legenden eines synchronisierten,
neutralen und reibungslosen Welt-Raums perpetuieren und dabei die
Exklusionen, Ausnahmen und Widersprüche marginalisieren, die
jeden Versuch zur Schaffung eines globalen Bildes begleiten.
Meine Vorgehensweisebesteht darin, Material, das universal
erscheint, mit Spuren eines historischen Kontexts, einer
kulturellen Perspektive und einer sozio-ökonomischen Realität zu
kontaminieren. Folglich dokumentieren meine künstlerischen
Untersuchungen auch die Geschichte von Begegnungen kultureller
Identitäten auf der Ebene des Handels, des Urbanismus und der
Kriegsführung.
