Ansprache von Andreas F. Britin zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung "Celebrity - The One & The Many" am 6.11.2010

Gerade die Differenz zwischen dem zu Verehrenden und dem eigenen Dasein war konstituierendes Element romantischer Heldenverehrung. Die kapitalistisch orientierte Mediengesellschaft hingegen suggeriert, dass es keinen Unterschied gibt – ausnahmslos jeder kann ein Star sein. Aus marktwirtschaftlichen Interessen heraus werden immer neue Stars generiert, die für anhaltende Aufmerksamkeit eines breiten Publikums sorgen. Die grundsätzliche Relevanz des Themas Celebrity-Kultur besteht im Umgang mit der Würde des Menschen bzw. ihrem Verlust. Die medialen Angebote der Celebrity-Kultur sind einer der Marktplätze auf denen die garantierte Menschenwürde verhandelbar wird.

Andreas F. Beitin, held the opening speech for the exhibition Elmgreen & Dragset running from 7 November 2010 – 27 March, 2011 at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art, on 6 November. It is precisely the difference between those one idolizes and one’s own existence that formed a constitutive element in the Romantic veneration of heroes. By contrast, the media society oriented on capitalism suggests that there is no difference – anyone, without exception, can become a star. An uninterrupted flow of stars is generated by market interests, which ensures the enduring attention of a broad public. The fundamental relevance of celebrity culture exists in the treatment with people’s dignity or loss of dignity. The medial range of products of the celebrity culture is offered on the marketplace where the guarantee of human dignity is negotiable.
